The New York Giants can talk all they want about how tight their locker room is Jarius Wright Jersey , how much they love Pat Shurmur's new offense and the new 3-4 defense installed coordinator James Bettcher.

      It's all talk.

That loving feeling does nothing for the Giants (0-1) heading into Dallas this weekend for a Sunday night game at the Cowboys (0-1).

With apologizes to the Righteous Brothers of the 1960s and '70s, what the Giants need is that winning feeling.

New York won three times last season in a campaign that led to the firing of coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese. The Giants are trying to bounce back under Shurmur and new general manager Dave Gettleman with a roster that includes more than 30 new players.

After a long offseason and training camp, this team needs the validation winning brings.

"Yeah, I think it's important to get that win and feel good about the work and the preparation," two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning said Wednesday. "I don't think it's because of last year. You got a lot of new players, different guys. You put last year behind us. It's about us as this group. Knowing that we can find ways to win football games."

The Giants came close in Week 1, losing 20-15 to the defending AFC South champion Jacksonville Jaguars Bobby Wagner Jersey , a team that was within a quarter of going to the Super Bowl before losing to the New England Patriots.

Safety Landon Collins said getting the feeling of winning is important, just as critical as not falling in a quick hole in both the division and conference.

"We're stacking each and every day," the safety and defensive captain said. "We're working each and every day to become better as a team, as a whole, and making sure we get that win."

Second-year tight end Evan Engram found wins few and far between last season.

"It's definitely important to us this week," Engram said. "It's a big division opponent on the road and we are preparing to go in and win. We're not worried about what can happen, or what if? What we are worried about is making sure we are taking care of things this week and we go out and play a complete game. It's important we get that winning feeling and have a good plane ride back home. That's the feeling we are chasing."

Shurmur is well aware that teams that fail to win in their first two games have a tough time making the playoffs. In the last decade James Hurst Jersey , the odds of making the postseason after an 0-2 record is a little less than 11 percent.

"Every game is important," he said. "It's not one more important than the other. Every game is important and makes a difference," the coach said. "Our mindset is just having a great week of preparation, everybody being on the same page, understanding their schemes, know our assignments, go out there and play smart football Rob Gronkowski Jersey , make plays, and put ourselves in a positon to win the game."

NOTES: LB Olivier Vernon did not practice. He sprained an ankle before the final preseason game against New England. It is uncertain whether he will play Sunday. ... LB Tae Davis (hamstring) returned to the field after missing the opener and was limited, as were WR Sterling Shepard (back) and RB Wayne Gallman (knee).

Cardinals tight end Ricky Seals-Jones was arrested in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Saturday and charged with assault, disorderly conduct and criminal trespassing, according to Arizona’s KTAR News.

Seals-Jones attempted to use the restroom inside the W Hotel in Scottsdale but was denied entry by hotel employees Devonta Freeman Jersey , who told him only guests were allowed inside at the time. He then attempted to use the bathroom inside a restaurant in the hotel.

An employee accused Seals-Jones of pushing him before the NFL player was taken down by hotel staff.

The police report said Seals-Jones appeared intoxicated, according to KTAR.

The news came only hours after General Manager Steve Keim pleaded guilty to extreme DUI, prompting the Cardinals to suspend and fine him.

Seals-Jones is expected to compete for the starting job.

FLORHAM PARK Larry Warford Jersey , N.J. (AP) — Josh McCown is still No. 1 on the New York Jets‘ quarterback depth chart. At this point, though, he might as well be No. 100.

With each practice, it appears increasingly likely that rookie Sam Darnold will be the starter when the regular season kicks off in three weeks. Not that McCown has done anything on the field to hurt his chances of retaining the job.

It’s simply a matter of circumstances.

McCown is 39 and been there, done that. Darnold is 21, was the third overall pick in the draft, has immense talent and is considered the future of the franchise — and that future could be now. He has shined in his last several practices and will likely start Friday night against the Giants in the team’s third preseason game.

“Like I said the whole time, obviously, we traded up to (No.) 3 to draft a quarterback to get Sam because there’s a plan in place,” McCown said. “So we understand that.”

That “plan” has been to give Darnold and Teddy Bridgewater the bulk of the work in the preseason and see how they perform. So far, so good — and that means McCown could slide down the depth chart very soon.

Coach Todd Bowles hasn’t announced a regular-season starter yet, and says he might not do so until after the fourth preseason game. From all indications, it’s trending in Darnold’s direction. But McCown isn’t necessarily reading into the fact Darnold is getting the bulk of the first-team snaps and that is causing the perception that the rookie will be the starter.

“No, I mean, obviously, he’s younger,” McCown said. “I was taking these kind of reps when he was 4 years old.”

Actually, Darnold was 5 when McCown was in his first NFL training camp with Arizona in 2002. But, point made.

“He needs the work and it’s good for him Allen Bailey Jersey ,” the veteran said. “Every rep is a great rep for all of us, there’s no doubt about it.”

Sure, he wants to start, but McCown is a realist. He knows his days as an NFL player, let alone starting quarterback, are dwindling.

“My goal for this is for the quarterback room to play well,” said McCown, who signed a $10 million deal in the offseason to return to New York. “And if that’s me playing out there, I want to play the best football that I can play. If that’s Sam or that’s Teddy, whoever that is, that’s the ultimate goal.”

Last summer, McCown also saw limited action in the preseason as the Jets tried to give Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty the opportunity to seize the starting gig. Neither could and McCown was the clear starter.

Darnold and Bridgewater have provided a different type of competition, a three-man race that is quickly becoming a two-man show — with McCown in the background.

“It’s fun to be out there playing and there’s no substitute for that,” McCown said. “That’s why we do it. At the same time, when you look at things from that prospective, if you can help be a part of finding that guy that can be that guy for this franchise for a long time, that means something to me, that’s competitive to me. That’s what we get up for work to do, that’s what makes it fun.

“I don’t feel like the forgotten guy because we’re busy every day working Phil McConkey Jersey , and working on those things. That’s all that matters.”

McCown has been in just about every situation imaginable throughout his professional career, which is entering its 17th year.

He has been a third-round pick, an up-and-coming passer, a backup, a starter and a place-holder in his stops with 10 teams. He spent one year out of the NFL and played in the United Football League. McCown has also spent time as a volunteer coach for a high school team in North Carolina.

He has graciously handled the many ups and downs during his career. Those experiences help McCown balance his competitive nature and the willingness to help those trying to take his job.

“I think for me, it’s just a personal thing,” McCown said. “At the end of the day, you go to work and you work as hard as you can and you help as many people as you can. And when you lay down and you can have peace in your heart at night, and you know that I did all I could that day, and then you sleep good. That’s what I learned growing up and that’s all I know.”

McCown takes nothing for granted and that’s something he has stressed to the young players in camp, and not just the quarterbacks. He’s the closest example of a player-coach you could find in the NFL, a mentor who seems destined to be in charge of a team someday.

McCown’s days of leading from the huddle might be about over, though.

And, he’s OK with whatever happens next.

“At this point in my career, I don’t know how many more years of this will happen, so you treasure every moment,” he said. “I think when you keep those things in perspective, there are days — nobody is perfect — there are days when you want to take every rep and you look back and you go, ‘Man Ray Nitschke Jersey , I wish I was just starting out again,’ but (you put it) all in perspective. It’s been fun and I enjoy being a part of this group. Todd sets a great tone and tempo every day for us and it is just an honor to be a part of it.

“So that is really what keeps me going and what allows me to come and enjoy it and not get caught up in anything else.”

At the start of his first news conference as the Atlanta Hawks coach, Lloyd Pierce looked down at a row filled with four of his new players.

His thoughts immediately turned to his passion: Defense.

”If we weren’t doing this press conference right now, I’d probably have these guys doing some defensive drills,” Pierce said Monday. ”That’s who I am.”

Pierce, the former Philadelphia 76ers assistant whose agreement to become the Hawks coach was announced Friday , said his first priority will be assembling a staff. Pierce will be looking for assistants who share his passion for defense and his proven ability to connect with young players.

A young Atlanta roster is about to add much more youth in next month’s NBA draft.

The Hawks leaned heavily on such young players as rookie John Collins and second-year forward Taurean Prince this season. More youth is coming in the June 21 NBA draft. The Hawks have three first-round picks and hope to land the No. 1 overall pick in Tuesday’s NBA draft lottery.

Pierce worked as an assistant with Cleveland, Golden State and Memphis before his five years with Philadelphia. His role in the 76ers’ rebuilding process was especially important to the Hawks, who face a similar challenge after posting the worst record in the Eastern Conference this season.

Hawks general manager Travis Schlenk said Pierce’s ”experiences in Philadelphia, keeping that positive vibe, that winning environment with what they went through” helped make him the right fit for the Hawks.

Four Hawks players – DeAndre Bembry, Mike Muscala, Kent Bazemore and Isaiah Taylor – sat together during the news conference.

Bazemore said other players around the league have sent him messages ”saying we got a good one.”

”I’m excited,” Bazemore said. ”… Bringing in a defensive-minded guy is important because that’s where championships are won. If we start there, I believe everything else will fall into place.”

Bembry said Pierce’s long record as an assistant, especially with the 76ers, who advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals, earns him immediate credibility.

”You instantly have to respect what he’s done,” Bembry said. ”He damn sure earned his first head coaching job.”

One of Pierce’s former Philadelphia players Marquel Lee Jersey , Robert Covington, also attended the news conference. He said he already was in Atlanta while visiting a family member and so he wanted to show his support for Pierce.

”He’s helped me so much in my career, it’s only right that I be here as well,” Covington said.

Asked if he has any doubt Pierce is ready to become a head coach, Covington said ”Absolutely not. I’ve seen coach develop and grow. … He definitely is a great coach.”

Schlenk said he was won over in his first of three interviews with Pierce. He said he told assistant GM Jeff Peterson midway through that interview at a Philadelphia airport hotel that Pierce was their guy.

”I just wrote on a little piece of paper and slid it over to Jeff and said `I told you, we’d know,”’ Schlenk said.

Pierce joked Monday he wished he had been passed that note.

”I’m just trying to figure out how I missed them sliding papers around,” Pierce said. ”They were taking notes but I didn’t really see that exchange. I was focused on my presentation more than anything.”

That presentation was on the mark.

”He answered every question right,” Schlenk said.

A Hawks group that also included majority owner Tony Ressler met with Pierce in Boston on Tuesday, followed by a third interview in Atlanta on Friday – hours before the team announced an agreement with Pierce.

Pierce, 42, fills the position left vacant when the Hawks and former coach Mike Budenholzer mutually agreed to part ways as Budenholzer interviewed for other jobs, most recently with the Bucks.

Schenk again said Monday he and Budenholzer remain on good terms. ”I talked with him a couple days ago,” Schlenk said. ”No hard feelings at all.”

BEREA Nate Solder Jersey , Ohio (AP) — Josh Gordon hasn’t reported to Cleveland Browns training camp, but his presence is being felt on the field.

Fellow wide receiver Rashard Higgins is wearing Gordon’s gear under his uniform at each practice.

“That’s my locker buddy, and I’m wearing his shirts every day,” Higgins said Saturday. “That’s why I feel like I’ve got superpowers when I come out here.”

Gordon remains away from the team as part of his treatment for drug and alcohol addictions. An NFL spokesman said the former Pro Bowl wideout has not been suspended.

Browns general manager John Dorsey and coach Hue Jackson remain confident that Gordon will return at some point, but no timetable has been set. Cleveland opens its preseason Thursday at the New York Giants.

“It will be like Josh never was gone when he comes back Landon Collins Jersey ,” said Higgins, a third-year pro. “That’s how we’re going to treat things. I feel like the team is a good supporting cast for him, just him knowing that we’re here for him and we’ve got his back, no matter what.”

The 27-year-old Gordon has played in only 10 games since leading the NFL with a franchise-record 1,646 yards receiving in 2013. He is in Stage 3 of the league’s substance-abuse program and faces another indefinite ban for any violation.

Higgins exchanged texts with his friend one day earlier Mitchell Schwartz Jersey , saying he is “in good spirits.” They have not discussed football in a conversation since Gordon was placed on the reserve/did not report list on July 23.

“We know Josh is handling his business off the field, and when he comes back, he’ll be ready to go,” Higgins said. “We don’t talk about anything on the field. We just talk about: ‘Hey, what’s up bro? How ya’ doin’?’ Just family Dustin Colquitt Jersey , little things like that.”

Gordon resumed posting workout videos on social media Thursday from the University of Florida, but he has not made any statements since camp began. He has missed 43 of the Browns’ last 48 games because of suspensions.

Last season, Gordon was reinstated by Commissioner Roger Goodell following a three-month stay in a rehabilitation facility. He played in the final five games — catching 18 passes for 335 yards and a touchdown — after revealing that he had not previously appeared in an NFL game while sober.

It’s been a little over four months since All-Pro left tackle Joe Thomas announced his retirement from the NFL.

In the time since making that announcement, Thomas has quickly ensured that he no longer resembles the large man who held down the left tackle spot for the Cleveland Browns for the last 11 seasons.

In an appearance on the NFL Network on Monday, Thomas said he has shed 50 pounds since the end of last season. Thomas was listed at 6-foot-6 Germain Ifedi Jersey , 312 pounds in the Browns 2017 media guide.

“I was more eager to lose weight than almost anything in retirement,” Thomas said.

Thomas’ weight loss is far from unique for former NFL linemen. Former Chargers lineman Nick Hardwick and Hall of Fame finalist Alan Faneca have also lost most of the extra weight they carried throughout their playing careers.

Thomas was clear that he felt the game has physically taken a toll on him throughout his 11-year career and believed he could no longer play the game that way he wanted. But just in case anyone was holding out for a Thomas un-retirement to save the fortunes of their team’s struggling offensive line, the books can probably closed on that possibility.

The topic took over the offseason Daniel Kilgore Jersey , as players complained and coaches worried and officials panicked.

But after the first full night of preseason games, the NFL’s new lowering the helmet rule hasn’t been called as often as some feared.

According to Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com, through the first 13 preseason games played so far, a total of 18 penalties have been called under the new rule.

That average of 1.38 calls per game is less than half the rate of offensive holding calls last season (3.2 per game).

Of course, it’s early yet, and officials could call more as the preseason goes along, to emphasize the rule early in the year so everyone gets used to its enforcement and can modify their behavior.

Colts safety Shamarko Thomas was ejected last night for a helmet-to-helmet hit, but the “lowering the helmet” language was not used.

Justin Verlander knew this would be one of the most emotional games of his major league career.

      He still wasn't prepared.

In his return to Detroit, Verlander received three standing ovations while pitching the Houston Astros to a 3-2 victory over the Tigers on Monday night.

Verlander (15-9) made his major league debut with the Tigers in 2005 and ranks among the top 10 on several of the team's career lists. He struck out 10 over seven innings in his first time on the Comerica Park mound since being traded to Houston in August 2017.

"Our hotel is right near my old house, so I got to spend some time in the neighborhood today," he said. "I was trying to keep my routine as much as possible."

That hope ended early Mackensie Alexander Jersey , as the scoreboard played a tribute video as Verlander was walking in from the bullpen after his pregame warmups. He stopped, alone in shallow right-center field, and watched the entire show.

"It was almost normal until the tribute video, but that really got to me," he said. "I had a lot of great memories in my 13 years here, and that brought it all back. I wanted to get to the dugout before it started, but once it started playing, I had to watch."

Verlander received his first ovation at the end of the video, and another when he came out for the first inning. Each time, he tipped his cap and waved to the fans.

The longest cheer, though Stephone Anthony Jersey , came when he walked off the mound after the seventh, having thrown 104 pitches.

"The one after the seventh really meant the world to me," he said. "The fans here were always great to be here, and they showed that again tonight. That was a really emotional moment."

The crowd was announced at 19,711 鈥?the Detroit Lions opened their season next door Monday night against the New York Jets.

"Tonight mattered a lot to him," Astros manager AJ Hinch said. "It is important to him that he pitched here and succeeded here, so it was special for him to get back on that mound."

The World Series champion Astros opened a three-game lead over Oakland atop the AL West despite a sloppy game that came after a Sunday night loss in Boston.

"I'm proud of our guys, because there was a lot going on today, and we didn't play our best game, but we still found a way to pull out a win," Hinch said.

Verlander allowed two runs on six hits and one walk Delano Hill Jersey , improving to 98-50 at Comerica Park. Max Scherzer is second in career wins at the stadium with 46, while Jordan Zimmermann leads current Tigers with 14.

"He got exactly the response he deserved from our fans," Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He was a great pitcher here for a long time, and he did a lot of great things for this city."

The Tigers put two runners on in the seventh, but Verlander struck out JaCoby Jones and Jeimer Candelario to escape with a 3-2 lead. He tipped his cap again as the fans came to their feet after the final pitch to Candelario.

"This was a special night," Verlander said.

Roberto Osuna worked the ninth for his 16th save, including seven with Houston.

Francisco Liriano (4-10) allowed three unearned runs on four hits and four walks in six innings. He struck out seven in his longest outing since pitching six innings on July 4.

The Tigers took the lead in the second. Niko Goodrum doubled and later scored on a single by Dawel Lugo.

Liriano's wild pitch and an error by shortstop Ronny Rodriguez allowed the Astros to score three unearned runs in the third. Tyler White and Marwin Gonzalez hit RBI singles, while the Tigers failed to turn two potential double plays.

"You have to make plays," Gardenhire said. "When you miss plays, that's what always happens. We had a chance to get some outs, didn't do it Ty Montgomery Jersey , and it cost us runs."

Verlander settled down after the second, retiring the next nine batters. Candelario walked to start the sixth, Christin Stewart followed with his first major league hit and Nicholas Castellanos had a sacrifice fly.

"If someone had told me that I was going to get my first hit off Justin Verlander in my first major league start . geez," Stewart said. "It was a pretty out-of-body experience."

Castellanos made a leaping catch at the right field fence to take an extra-base hit away from Gonzalez in the eighth.

Josh Reddick, in the game for Houston as a defensive replacement, started an inning-ending double play in the eighth with a sliding catch in left field.

      EARLY START

The game started at 6:10 p.m., an hour earlier than originally scheduled, to try to ease traffic congestion with the Lions playing at Ford Field. A day game wasn't possible because of the Astros playing on Sunday night in Boston.

      UP NEXT

The teams continue their three-game series Tuesday night with Zimmermann (7-6, 4.03 ERA) facing Houston's Framber Valdez (3-1, 1.37).

Bills center Eric Wood announced in January that a neck injury discovered at an end of season physical led doctors to advise against playing again Adam Joseph Duhe Jersey , but a press conference to announce his retirement wound up ending without any official announcement that his career was over.

Wood remained on the 90-man roster and the delay was explained as having to do with salary cap issues, including Wood’s $10 million-plus cap hit for the 2018 season and the possibility that the Bills could ask for signing bonus money back due to Wood’s retirement.

Wood won’t be returning any of the bonus money and he won’t be on the Buffalo roster anymore either. John Wawrow of the Associated Press was the first to report that the Bills will release Wood. Field Yates of ESPN adds that the move comes after the two sides reached an injury settlement.

They will take the entire cap hit this year rather than make him a post-June 1 cut to spread the cap hit out over the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

Wood started 120 games over nine seasons with the Bills. Buffalo signed former Bengals center Russell Bodine as a free agent and also have Ryan Groy on hand as an option in the middle of the offensive line. The Bills also released guard Richie Incognito after his own flirtation with retirement and traded tackle Cordy Glenn to the Bengals this offseason.

Some teams have called the Packers about the availability of receiver Randall Cobb Danielle Hunter Jersey , but according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the team does not have him on the trade block.

It disputed an earlier report by Mike Lombardi of the Ringer, who said Cobb was “available” with one-time Pro Bowler “being shopped around.”

Cobb is in the final year of his contract, scheduled to make $8.6 million in base salary. With the Packers using three draft choices on receivers, Cobb very well could leave Green Bay as a free agent in March. But it appears he will spend his eighth season with the Packers.

Rapoport said the Packers “expect him contributing on their team.”

44-year-old Terrell Owens isn’t the only former 49ers receiver who thinks he could still play in the NFL well past retirement age. 55-year-old Jerry Rice thinks he could still play, too.

The confidence that allows a player to thrive in sports often strays into the territory of delusion, and if Rice thinks he could match physical skills with today’s NFL players, he’s definitely delusional.

Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy refuses to dwell on the second-half collapse by his team in Sunday's 24-23 loss at Green Bay in the season opener.

It's not easy Geronimo Allison Jersey , considering the Bears blew a 20-point lead in Nagy's head coaching debut. They'll take it as a lesson learned.

"It stings, but we need to use this," Nagy said Monday after reviewing film. "We need to go ahead and use this to get better.

"If you have the negative, pessimistic approach to it, then that's all wrong."

The loss bore a striking resemblance to the way Nagy's season ended last year as Kansas City's offensive coordinator 鈥?a 22-21 playoff loss to Tennessee after the Chiefs led 21-3.

Except in this one it was an injured Aaron Rodgers coming off the bench to lead the comeback against Khalil Mack and a Bears defense that dominated the first half.

Meanwhile, the Bears offense and quarterback Mitchell Trubisky struggled at some key points in the game with chances to lock up a win.

"We're close," Trubisky said after the game. "We know how close we are."

Rodgers took the Packers downfield immediately for the game-winning touchdown, and Trubisky failed to get the Bears past midfield needing a field goal on their final possession.

Trubisky finished 23 of 35 for 171 yards with a passer rating of 77.2.

"He played the way I knew he could play Jordy Nelson Jersey ," Nagy said of Trubisky. "He made some plays. Now we left some out there too, but that's going to happen."

Trubisky missed a throw on a fade pattern in the end zone to a wide-open Allen Robinson, resulting in a field goal instead of a touchdown. He had a few other mistakes and the Bears settled for two second-half field goals, while struggling on third-and-short situations.

"We expected a lot of man (coverage) on third-and-short and they came out and played a bunch of zone," Trubisky said. "Credit to them for just mixing it up.

"A lot of our calls were built for man. We had some risky calls that we just went with and we blew them and they just made plays that we didn't."

On the final drive, in particular, Trubisky appeared somewhat rattled by the rush and overthrew Robinson. He also appeared too willing to abandon the play to scramble.

"There were some good ones, and there were a few where I thought his clock was ticking a little too fast Josh Sitton Jersey ," Nagy said. "You get the pocket collapse a little bit, and I thought that instead of just sliding and then hitching forward, it was a run. He kinda dashed out of there."

Nagy also criticized his own play-calling, including a pair of ill-advised screen passes.

"They played the screens well yesterday," Nagy said. "That's a credit to them. I go back personally. We ran two screens back to back and I didn't like those calls.

"I told the guys those were on me."

Nagy noted defensive problems as well, such as shoddy second-half tackling and Kyle Fuller dropping a potential game-deciding interception. By and large, the offense had the most struggles with just 16 points scored.

One area where Nagy wouldn't back down was in defending his decision not to play starters in the next-to-last preseason game. He feels it had no negative influence on offensive execution.

"The start of the game, going right down the field in 14 plays and scoring a touchdown Jordan Phillips Jersey , that's growth," Nagy said. "The middle, the three-and-outs, that's not growth. We've got to fix those.

"And so that's not just the players, that's the coaching staff, that's myself. We do it together."

NOTES: The Bears came through the game without a new injury. Linebacker Danny Trevathan went down briefly with a back injury but returned and finished. ... Hall of Fame inductee Brian Urlacher will be honored at halftime of Monday night's home opener against Seattle with induction into the Bears Ring of Excellence. Urlacher's Hall of Fame bust will be at Soldier Field.

Colts owner Jim Irsay recently said he wouldn’t trade backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett, even for a first-round pick. Which means he certainly wouldn’t trade Brissett for a second-round pick. But he reportedly had the chance.

The Seahawks offered the Colts a second-round pick for Brissett but were turned down, according to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe.

That’s an odd report: The Seahawks have Russell Wilson at quarterback Mark Clayton Jersey , and he’s started all 16 games for all six of his seasons in Seattle. Why give up a second-round pick for a player who might never see the field?

The answer may be that Seahawks offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer was the Colts’ quarterbacks coach last year, and Schottenheimer loves Brissett. If Schottenheimer has been raving about Brissett in Seattle, he may have convinced the higher-ups that Brissett would be worth trading for.

The Colts, however, are apparently unwilling to do it. Brissett is slated to continue backing up Andrew Luck, rather than backing up Wilson.

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix skipped organized team activities. That may — or may not — have been over his desire for a new contract.

The Packers safety winked twice when answering questions about his absence. His godmother Aaron Burbridge Jersey , Alisa Dorsett, died last month after suffering a heart attack while in Alabama for his college graduation. That was at least part of the reason for his absence.

“I had a lot of freedom,” Clinton-Dix said, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN. “It’s not meant for me to be here. I don’t have a [workout] bonus to be here, so that definitely played a big role in me not being here, honestly, along with my godmother not making it. It’s kind of like, I can just stay home with my family and enjoy my family time while I have the downtime. When the season kicks off, it’s just me up here. That’s life. S— goes on from time to time, but I’m excited not to have that bonus in there, though, honestly, because I would have definitely been here for my money.

“You can’t buy time. So just to have that freedom to be able to get away Anthony Hitchens Jersey , I think that was a plus not having it, honestly.”

Clinton-Dix returned to Green Bay on Tuesday to avoid the $84,435 fine for missing the three days of the mandatory minicamp. He is scheduled to make $5.957 million this season on the fifth-year option of his rookie deal.

Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor held out in 2015, missing the first two games of the season while seeking a new deal. He signed a three-year contract extension in August 2017.

Clinton-Dix said he won’t hold out.

“What would holding out do?” Clinton-Dix said. “Kam’s not me. He’s nowhere near me. You’re just wasting your time, really. You’re getting fined and fined and fined. I’m a guy that I need my money, man. That’s why I’m here now. I need my money.”

      — Terrell Owens came in wearing a suit spotted with the Pro Football Hall of Fame logo and swapped that out for the prized gold jacket.

His bust? That remained 600 miles away in Canton, Ohio, along with the seven other members of this year’s Hall of Fame class, leaving the stage at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga all alone to Owens.

And yes, the man known as T.O. later brought out a big bucket of popcorn.

Owens entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in a celebration uniquely his own Saturday afternoon at his alma mater before approximately 3,000 fans who frequently cheered, chanted “T.O.” and gave him the occasional standing ovation. Owens also made clear why he chose to enter the Hall of Fame with a ceremony in Chattanooga instead of with Ray Lewis, Randy Moss and former Eagles teammate Brian Dawkins in Ohio.

“A lot of people say that I may regret not being in Canton 10 Ryan Tannehill Jersey , 15, 20 years from now,” Owens said. “But just like my choice to be here today, I choose not to live in regret. I will leave a legacy that will leave an imprint on this world forever.”

Owens used part of a speech lasting about 39 minutes to explain why he was in Chattanooga instead of Canton, addressing the “elephant in the room.”

“It’s not because of how many times it took for me to be voted to the hall,” said Owens, who got in on his third try — the same as Joe Namath, for example. “It’s about the mere fact that the sports writers are not in alignment with the mission and core values of the Hall of Fame.

“These writers disregarded the system, the criteria and bylaws in which guys are inducted, and ultimately the true meaning of the Hall of Fame and what it represents. I wanted to take a stand so the next guy coming after me will not have to go through what I and others have gone through. Whether it’s three years or 45 years, you should get what you rightfully earned.”

The wide receiver who ranked second in NFL history with 15,934 yards receiving and third with 153 touchdown catches didn’t mention that Hall of Famers Dan Fouts and James Lofton also are on the selection committee. Owens later discussed his issue with the current selection process at a news conference that lasted 26 minutes, saying writers never played the game Matt Breida Jersey , with no “blood, sweat and tears” invested.

Only one person makes a speech in Canton to introduce an inductee. By holding his own ceremony, Owens heard short speeches from five coaches, including three former position coaches, with James Kirksey and Ray Sherman from the NFL. The university named a street after the Hall of Fame receiver.

A friend of Ray Lewis was at Friday night’s gold jacket ceremony and brought it to Chattanooga for T.O. The original plan had been to mail it on Saturday to him.

T.O. said he had a Plan B in case it didn’t arrive in time. He also wore a “C” for Chattanooga pin on each lapel.

Owens thanked everyone from his late grandmother and mother to coaches from his high school days in Alexander City, Alabama, through his time at Chattanooga and into the NFL. At times, he was grateful for help received along the way, cited a Bible verse from Deuteronomy, and even thanked people who “defamed” him behind his back and teammates who hated him.

“This is for you,” Owens said.

Near the end of his speech, Owens asked anyone who had ever felt isolated, misunderstood or bullied to stand up. Then Owens encouraged them not to be afraid to be themselves.

“We have more commonalities than differences. This entire speech you thought was about me 12th Fan Jersey , this was for you,” Owens said.

None of his former NFL teammates could be seen in the crowd. Johnny Taylor, the 17th pick overall in the 1997 NBA draft by Orlando, flew in to see his former teammate inducted into the hall. He understands that some people were surprised by Owens’ decision.

“He’s always going to do it his way and what’s beneficial to him and his family,” Taylor said. “Me personally, I’m excited that he is doing it here. It means so much to the city, it means so much to the university. It speaks volumes to the type of person that he is, even though other people may think other of him.”

Fans wore Owens’ No. 81 jersey from his stints in Dallas, San Francisco and Philadelphia. Renee Davis of Philadelphia canceled tickets she bought to see Owens inducted in Canton and arrived in Chattanooga on Friday to see the receiver she called the best ever give his speech. She wore Owens’ No. 80 from his college days, bought when he was an NFL rookie.

Missing the Hall of Fame’s other seven inductees and all the pageantry of Canton was no loss for Davis.

“Can’t compare to being here with my favorite,” Davis said. “Can’t compare.”

The temperature was well into triple digits and sweat-soaked Larry Fitzgerald was still going full bore Andre Reed Jersey , hauling in passes from Sam Bradford and Josh Rosen.

Entering his 15th season, with career receiving numbers among the best to have played the game, Fitzgerald is not talking about whether this year in the NFL will be his last.

"I'm just trying to make it to February in one piece," he said after the team's second day of minicamp on Wednesday.

Fitzgerald, who will turn 35 before the season begins, has taken part in every voluntary session with the same competitive mindset he's always had. As silly as it sounds, he said he plays like his job is on the line.

"When I say that I'm not saying it jokingly, that's the mentality that you have to have," he said. "All these guys, they're not bringing them in here for their own health. They're bringing them here to give them the opportunity to take your job. That's not lost on me ever. I'm fighting and competing just like everybody else is."

New coach Steve Wilks treasures having someone like Fitzgerald to help the Cardinals transition into a new system with the retirement of Bruce Arians.

"His commitment to this team, to this organization is invaluable," Wilks said. "It means a lot to me as a first-year head coach Maxx Williams Jersey , a guy like that who can be an extension of you in the locker room, a true leader."

Fitzgerald is No. 1, with a lot of competition as to who will line up at the other receiver spots.

"The speed of the pack is determined by the speed of the leader," Wilks said. "He's one of the leaders. Guys are going to fall in line with him. The younger receivers are going to take his lead. It's great to have him out there. Not just being out there, but the way he goes about his business."

Fitzgerald said Wilks asked him to be there during voluntary OTAs and was effusive in his praise of new receivers coach Kevin Garver, who was assistant receivers coach in Arians' five seasons in Arizona.

Fitzgerald called Garver "one of the sharpest minds I've been around."

"I knew coach Wilks asked me early on to be here," Fitzgerald said. "And more so than that I wanted to start off on the right foot and make sure Kevin knew I was in the fight with him from day one. I want to be successful for Kevin and I knew in a few more years he'll be an offensive coordinator and a few years after that he'll be a head coach. I want to make sure that I'm doing everything I can while I can to help him elevate."

Fitzgerald has had a lot of quarterbacks throw him passes since he was drafted third overall by the Cardinals in 2004.

Now he's getting used to a new one in Bradford, who is being eased into workouts because he's coming off a knee injury.

Fitzgerald said the two are still learning each other, as is expected.

"That comes through repetition," Fitzgerald said. "The same thing with Kurt Warner when he first got here and with Carson (Palmer) six years ago when he got here. It takes a little time but once two veterans are able to learn each other it makes it a lot easier."

With Bradford watching much of the time, Fitzgerald has caught a lot of balls from the rookie Rosen.

"I'm really impressed with how Josh has been able to grasp everything," Fitzgerald said.

Star running back David Johnson was absent again Wednesday in an apparent contract holdout.

Fitzgerald wouldn't say much about that but hinted at his support for the player.

"I don't know the details of it Jerry Rice Jersey , honestly," Fitzgerald said. "I don't know anything that's going on. But I'm always for my teammates. I love my guys. I'll just leave it at that."

Fitzgerald is a well-documented world traveler. After the final minicamp session on Thursday, he and cornerback Patrick Peterson, a fellow avid golfer, are headed off together.

"We'll be over in St. Andrews playing some golf," he said. "We're going to have a good time. It's Pat's first time, so I want to beat him at the oldest golf course in the world."

Who's paying for the trip? At least indirectly, Fitzgerald said, Peterson is.

"Pat's paying for the trip after all the money I've taken from him this offseason," he said. "I'm appreciative of that."

NAPA, Calif. (AP) — Marquel Lee wasn’t quite ready to end the revolving door at middle linebacker for the Oakland Raiders when he was thrown into the starting lineup to start his rookie season last year.

With a year of experience and a defensive scheme that better suits his game, Lee is doing his best to seize that role this season even after the Raiders brought in veteran Derrick Johnson to be the likely starter.

Lee has spent most of training camp as Oakland’s middle linebacker in the base defense and was one of the team’s best defensive players in the exhibition opener last week against Detroit when he had three solo tackles and two assists in just 15 snaps.

“There is a guy that really stepped up Cris Carter Jersey ,” coach Jon Gruden said. “He had a great game. He’s physical. I think he’s more and more of a complete linebacker. He’s getting more comfortable in pass coverage. I think he’s a presence in the middle of our defense right now. It’s something that is not going unnoticed with his teammates and coaches.”

Lee showed signs of being stout against the run when he started the first five games last year as a fifth-round draft pick. But he struggled in coverage and the Raiders brought in veteran NaVorro Bowman to take over as starter in Week 6 and Lee played only sparingly the rest of the way.

But Lee looks like a different player in year two and Gruden said he sees the potential for him to become a three-down linebacker. Lee said he feels much more confident in coach Paul Guenther’s defense than he did last year when Ken Norton Jr. was coordinator.

“I’m playing faster,” Lee said. “I’m seeing things faster and diagnosing things and playing with more instinct. I’m more comfortable in the defense. I know where I need to be, which allows me to fit the run well and just make plays.”

The Raiders signed veteran Derrick Johnson in May with the thought of making him the starter but Lee has gotten more time so far in camp with Johnson playing a limited role in sub packages.

Finding a middle linebacker has been difficult for Oakland in recent years.

The Raiders drafted Rolando McClain in the first round in 2010 with hopes he would solidify that spot for years to come. But McClain lost his starting job midway through the 2012 season and the Raiders have been searching for a long-term answer ever since.

Nick Roach filled that role in 2013 but then suffered a career-ending concussion the following preseason. Miles Burris took over in 2014 but wasn’t up to the task and the Raiders signed Curtis Lofton the following season.

Lofton struggled in the passing game and wasn’t brought back the following season when Ben Heeney started the year as the starter before Perry Riley was brought in off the waiver wire midway through the year.

The Raiders made a midseason switch again last year after Lee began the year as the starter. Bowman was signed after being released by San Francisco and finished the year as the starter.

Oakland overhauled the position this offseason, signing Tahir Whitehead and Emmanuel Lamur, who have been starting on the outside, as well as adding Johnson.

Lamur played for Guenther in Cincinnati and has helped his teammates make the transition to a new system.

“I feel like we’ve had a chance to grow as a core together, going through offseason workouts, and then summer workouts, and then into training camp,” Lee said. “Just being around each other all the time and stuff, grow as a core, we have each other’s backs out there. Also having Emmanuel Reuben Foster Jersey , he’s been in the system for a long time, since he came out of college. He’s a great help. He knows the ins and outs, and if we have a question we go to him — or any of the guys — but Emmanuel for sure knows the ins and outs of this defense.”

NOTES: CB Daryl Worley, WR Seth Roberts and WR Martavis Bryant all returned to practice. Bryant had missed two days with an illness. “We’re calling Martavis the ‘White Tiger,'” Gruden said. “Thirteen times I went to Busch Gardens. The white tiger was always in his cage. Well, the white tiger came out today. Bryant came out. I don’t know if you get that analogy, but sometimes he comes out to play and sometimes he doesn’t. It’s good to see because he’s really special like the white tiger.” … The Raiders claimed DT Gabe Wright off waivers from Miami and placed DT Ahtyba Rubin on injured reserve.

    • When Chris Long and LeGarrette Blount joined the Philadelphia Eagles after winning a Super Bowl in New England Patrick DiMarco Jersey , both players envisioned another title run with a team on the rise.

They had more faith than most, but the Eagles are two wins away from a parade.

”I knew we’d be a playoff team and that’s why I decided this would be a good place to be and then what separates you is winning a game or two,” Long said as Philadelphia prepared for Sunday’s NFC championship game against the Minnesota Vikings.

The Eagles were 7-9 last year in the first season under coach Doug Pederson and quarterback Carson Wentz. Expectations were moderate entering 2017 with many experts projecting the team to be a year away from serious playoff contention.

But Blount saw a team that was close. The Eagles added receivers Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith, traded for defensive tackle Tim Jernigan and signed Long before giving Blount a one-year deal in May.

”I chose the Eagles for the reason of me fitting in really good here, having a championship run, having a banner season,” Blount said after he signed. ”And they’re a really good team. They’re a really good team before I came. I just want to fit in.”

He was right and he’s fit in perfectly.

Wentz had an MVP-caliber season before he tore his ACL in Week 14 and the Eagles (14-3) secured the NFC’s No. 1 seed. Blount was the team’s leading rusher, though he’s played a secondary role since Jay Ajayi was acquired in a trade in October.

Blount hasn’t complained about fewer carries and has provided veteran leadership. He led the NFL with 18 touchdowns rushing last year when he earned his second Super Bowl ring in three seasons with the Patriots.

”We’re winning and that’s the overall goal,” Blount said. ”We don’t care about personal success. You can’t be selfish when everybody has one common goal. You have to make sacrifices for the betterment of the team. We’ve done that and it’s gotten us this far.”

Long played 65 percent of the snaps last season and posted four sacks Trent Murphy Jersey , four tackles for loss and a forced fumble. His role has decreased in Philadelphia – he played 48 percent of the snaps – but he’s been an instrumental part of the team’s success and keeping a deep defensive line fresh.

”His attitude and the way he approaches things, coming from New England, coming off winning a Super Bowl, I think the biggest thing that Chris has brought here is a bunch of leadership, especially being the older guy in our room,” Pro Bowl defensive tackle Fletcher Cox said. ”Not being here, coming in the room with a bunch of new guys, man, he fit right in. I think the thing about Chris is when he goes out on the field Shaq Lawson Jersey , he means a lot. He doesn’t play a whole lot, but when he is in the game, man, he wrecks shop.”

Former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky said Long is the one player on Philadelphia’s defense that he would be concerned with most because ”he never stops.”

”He has a next-level motor,” Orlovsky told The Associated Press . ”It’s unusual.”

The Eagles have other players who’ve won Super Bowls – Smith, Malcolm Jenkins, Corey Graham, Dannell Ellerbe, Chris Maragos De'Anthony Thomas Jersey , and Will Beatty – but Blount and Long did it most recently and were part of the Patriot Way so they’ve shared valuable experiences.

”There’s a lot of good resources on this team for Super Bowl experience,” Long said. ”Younger players really need to stick to the script, prepare hard and don’t try to do too much. The key is to take it out of your head that it’s the playoffs and show up and do your work.”

      Blount echoed those feelings.

”You have so many things going on and it’s not something you can get away from it because it’s on TV, it on your phone, it’ on every bit of social media,” Blount said. ”So you have to make sure you zoom in and zone in on what you have to do and focus on what our goal is and the task at hand.”

AP NFL website: Utah defensive lineman Lowell Lotulelei says Michigan defensive lineman Maurice Hurst Jr. told him Saturday that he had been diagnosed with the same heart condition as Lotulelei’s older brother, Star.

The comments came shortly after ESPN.com first reported Hurst will not be allowed to participate in drills.

League spokesman Michael Signora confirmed that players can be held out based on certain diagnoses but that he believed Hurst was still in town.

Jeff Foster, president of National Football Scouting, declined to confirm details of what happened because of privacy concerns. But he did tell The Associated Press that six to eight players have been withheld from drills this year for reasons players were not aware of before their arrival.

Foster said that number has stayed relatively consistent over the past 13 years.

Hurst had been rising steadily on mock draft boards.

The 6-foot-2 Pierre Garcon Jersey , 280-pound defensive tackle had 59 tackles and 5 1/2 sacks last season. He also had 13 tackles for loss and has been considered one component of a deep class of defensive tackles in this year’s draft.

Hurst’s father played seven seasons with the New England Patriots as a cornerback.

Word leaked just after defensive linemen and linebackers started talking to reporters at the NFL’s annual scouting combine in Indianapolis.

”I just found out in the NFLPA meeting that we just had. He just said, `Star was your brother?’ And I said yeah. He’s like, `Man, I just got the same thing that he did,”’ Lowell Lotulelei told reporters. ”Obviously I didn’t go through it, so I don’t really know what he’s feeling like. But I kind of understand the disappointment just because my brother trained just like he trained and you’re expecting one thing and getting another. I feel for him. It sucks. But I think he’ll be fine just like my brother was.”

Five years ago, Star Lotulelei arrived at the combine as the expected first pick in that year’s draft.

Things changed dramatically after doctors identified an ”abnormal” test on his heart.

Lotulelei then sought additional opinions, eventually was cleared to exercise and was taken by Carolina with the 14th overall selection in the 2013 draft. He has missed only four games in five NFL seasons.

LeBron James sprung to his feet and screamed along with thousands of delirious Cleveland fans.

When Indians outfielder Rajai Davis connected off Chicago Cubs reliever Aroldis Chapman for a tying home run in the eighth inning of Game 7 of the 2016 World Series Ziggy Ansah Jersey , James came unglued and reacted the way he might after a monstrous dunk or back-breaking 3-pointer in the NBA Finals.

And while his fanatical response said a lot about James and his allegiance to the Indians, so did the tight, black T-shirt he wore on that unseasonably warm November night.

      It said: ”Cleveland Or Nowhere.”

As the sports world waits to see where the three-time champion intends to play next season and beyond, there remains the real possibility that James could choose to stay in Cleveland, his hoops home for 11 of the past 15 years and where this Northeast Ohio son shares a unique and profound connection with fans who have followed him since his teens.

James has other options: Los Angeles (salary-cap space for another star, Magic Johnson in charge), Houston (a chance to play on a super team with MVP James Harden), Philadelphia (young stars Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid), and maybe more.

But, as has always been the case for James, home will pull at his heart.

For the longest time, the perception was that once James ended Cleveland’s 52-year title drought in 2016 Jim Brown Jersey , he would leave again as soon as he could. That doesn’t seem to be a slam dunk any longer.

By Friday, James is expected to make his first move and likely decline a $35.6 million contract option for next season with the Cavs, who are hoping their past loyalties to the 33-year-old and his own sentimental attachments – family, legacy – will keep him in Cleveland.

Unlike his free-agency forays in 2010 and 2014, James will not meet with prospective teams. He’s letting agent Rich Paul and his other representatives handle the business side of things as he vacations with family and makes up his mind.

Months ago, James’ connection with the Cavs seemed broken, hopeless. Last summer’s shocking trade of All-Star Kyrie Irving, the team’s failed attempt to integrate guard Isaiah Thomas, a lack of playmakers, assorted injuries and coach Tyronn Lue’s medical issues contributed to James appearing ready to pull up stakes again and pursue championships elsewhere.

But a funny thing happened on the way to the NBA Finals.

James was boosted by general manager Koby Altman’s drastic-and-dramatic roster overhaul at the trading deadline, and despite a lack of cohesion and Vegas odds makers labeling the Cavs as underdogs, Cleveland advanced to a fourth straight summer showdown with Golden State Jabaal Sheard Jersey , surviving two Game 7s and sweeping the top-seeded Toronto Raptors along the way.

Of course, James did all the heavy lifting. He played in all 82 regular-season games and had perhaps his best postseason, averaging 34 points, 9.1 rebounds and 9.0 assists while making a pair of buzzer-beating shots and doing all he could in a Finals sweep that could have been much different if Cleveland had not lost Game 1 in overtime.

”He gave his heart and soul, die-hard energy, commitment to this team, to this franchise, to the city, to Northeast Ohio,” Altman said last week after the Cavs drafted Alabama guard Collin Sexton, who quickly raised some eyebrows by choosing to wear No. 2, Irving’s number for six seasons with Cleveland. ”It was an historical year and probably one of the best postseason runs of all time. We’re very Graham Gano Jersey , very fortunate to have him here and what he gave to this franchise this year was nothing short of remarkable.

”We don’t take that for granted at all.”

And it’s why the Cavs haven’t surrendered from the fight to keep him.

Owner Dan Gilbert, whose relationship with James remains tricky if not rocky, has displayed a willingness to spend whatever’s necessary to keep his team championship competitive. That’s unlikely to change whether James extends his second stint with Cleveland.

In a recent Business Insider podcast, Gilbert referred to James as a ”partner,” an acknowledgment by the billionaire to what the superstar he once criticized means to his franchise.

The appeal for James to stay home is different now than it was eight years ago when he bolted for Miami. He’s more mature, with three children and a burgeoning business empire. His priorities, responsibilities and goals are different.

After the Warriors finished their Finals sweep of the Cavs, James revealed an injured right hand but an unchanged view of the next phase of his career.

”I will still continue to be in championship mode,” he said. ”When I decide what I’m going to do with my future, my family and the folks that have been with me for the last 20 years will have a say-so. Then it ultimately will come down to me.”

This is the time of year when training camp fights are practically commonplace, though some recent rumbles have taken it to extremes.

Whether it was Jaguars defensive players fighting with each other, or the Jets and Washington throwing down Micah Hyde Jersey , or the Dolphins cutting a guy after he threw an elbow at a teammate, tempers are as high as the temperatures. But Buccaneers coach Dirk Koetter remains cool about it.

According to Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times, two Buccaneers players got into it during the final period in Monday’s practice, so Koetter had players run gassers and ended practice at that point, in following with his zero tolerance policy.

“We had a fight. Big deal. I mean, it’s football,” said Koetter, who has a policy of sending players off if they throw at a teammate during drills. “That was one of our best practices of the year right there. It just didn’t end on a positive note from the fight standpoint. You’re dreaming if you think that stuff’s not going to happen in football. . . .

“I don’t think twice about that. It’s over, and what happened happened. It’s just the way it is.”

Many such fights are rooted in teams being tired of looking at themselves (though sometimes inviting another team in ratchets up the intensity). And the Bucs are about to embark on two days of joint workouts with the Titans. Koetter said he’s already discussed things with Titans coach Mike Vrabel, and he plans to send any players who fight off the field.

We’ll see if the deterrent works.

Antonio Brown’s locker sat empty on Friday save for the stack of cardboard boxes pushed off to the side Jack Doyle Jersey , items the Pittsburgh Steelers star wide receiver hasn’t gotten around to unpacking just yet. The All-Pro is too busy trying to get his injured left calf ready in time for Pittsburgh’s division playoff game to worry about wading into his ever-expanding universe of swag.

The AFC North champions are optimistic Brown’s familiar No. 84 will run out of the tunnel at Heinz Field on Jan. 14. Brown hasn’t played a snap since injuring the leg while trying to haul in a touchdown pass in the second quarter against New England on Dec. 17. If for some reason his leg doesn’t heal in time, the Steelers (13-3) are confident they can thrive without him.

”We don’t know what’s going to happen with 84,” veteran receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey said. ”Things sound good but we don’t know. I’m confident because we put the work in. You saw it in the Patriots game. We didn’t panic when AB got hurt. Guys rolled in, played ball. The last few weeks we’ve been doing that.”

Pittsburgh persevered thanks in part to the precocious development of rookie JuJu Smith-Schuster, the resilience of Martavis Bryant and offensive coordinator Todd Haley’s refusal to pigeon hole the many weapons at his disposal. Haley insists that every wide receiver and tight end learn how to run every route from every conceivable spot along the line of scrimmage. Even running back Le’Veon Bell (whose 85 receptions ranked 10th in the league) is required to pick it up.

”We’ve got to keep it unpredictable,” tight end Jesse James said. ”We can’t let defense know where AB is going to line up every time. That goes for everybody. We’re always looking to see different matchups.”

Ones the Steelers exploited even with Brown out.

Smith-Schuster averaged 110 yards receiving over the final three games. Bryant’s tumultuous return from a yearlong suspension, a return that included an early-season trade demand, ended with a flourish. He caught 13 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown over the last three weeks. Even reserves Heyward-Bey and Justin Hunter found the end zone as Pittsburgh bounced back from a difficult loss to the Patriots to clinch a first-round playoff bye.

Don’t get Brown’s teammates wrong. Pittsburgh is infinitely better with the only unanimous selection on the NFL’s 2017 All-Pro team in the lineup. Yet the drop-off isn’t quite as steep as it would have been a year ago, when Bryant was out of the league, Smith-Schuster was still in college and injuries forced the Steelers to use a largely anonymous group to fill in the gaps.

It speaks to the depth Pittsburgh has cultivated over the last 12 months that Cobi Hamilton Kyle Williams Jersey , who caught the team’s lone touchdown pass in an AFC title game loss to New England, didn’t survive the final round of cuts in August.

”Out of all the years I’ve been here, I’m confident knowing we have more hands, we have more in our deck of cards,” said Heyward-Bey, now in his fourth season with the Steelers. ”We’ve got more things going on.”

Smith-Schuster has been a revelation as both a route runner and an enthusiastic blocker in the running game. And Brown’s absence has given Bryant the playing time he was looking for when he went to the team in September and asked to be traded. Things have quieted down since, and his production level ticked up as the season went along. Bryant had at least four receptions in five of Pittsburgh’s last six games. He only had one game with more than four receptions over the first 10 weeks.

Bryant stressed the receivers didn’t ”add more pressure to ourselves” when Brown went down but added ”everybody wants to have AB’s back and be great for him.” Perhaps no one has more at stake than the 26-year-old Bryant, who showed flashes of greatness in in 2014-15 before multiple violations of the NFL’s substance abuse policy put his career in jeopardy. The road back has been rocky but nothing Bryant says he can’t handle.

”This is nothing compared to what I’ve been through,” Bryant said. ”This is a walk in the park for me. Just happy to be back. This year almost over. We got three more games left, looking forward to those and see what happens.”

At the time, Owens hadn’t yet indicated he was skipping the Canton induction ceremony.Wharton said Owens spoke with them again “two to three weeks ago” about the possibility of giving his induction speech on campus and that officials were “ecstatic” about the idea.“Obviously we supported him going to Canton Damien Wilson Jersey ,” Wharton said. “At the time, there hadn’t been any living Hall of Fame members who did not go to Canton, so our assumption was that he was (going to Canton). But in multiple conversations with him and his team, he felt most comfortable doing it in a place that molded him into the player and person he is today.”Wharton said the specifics of the Aug. 4 ceremony haven’t been finalized, but he expects a weekend full of events around town honoring Owens.Owens entered the league as a third-round pick by San Francisco in 1996 and developed into a star known for some memorable playoff appearances, including his winning 25-yard TD catch to beat Green Bay in 1999; his 177 yards in a comeback win against the Giants in 2003; and his nine catches for 122 yards in the 2004 Super Bowl against New England just seven weeks after breaking his leg.He ranks second to Jerry Rice with 15,934 yards receiving and is third on the all-time touchdowns receiving list with 153.Owens heavily criticized the voting process when he failed to be elected in 2016 and 2017. The Anaheim Ducks showed their embarrassment from their playoff-opening shutout loss with every bone-crunching hit they landed on the San Jose Sharks throughout Game 2.

The Sharks knew what to expect from their hard-nosed California rivals. Even after the Ducks scored in the opening minute Brandin Cooks Jersey , San Jose survived the storm quite well – and when Anaheim made minor mistakes, the Sharks capitalized for enough goals to take a major series lead back to San Jose.

Logan Couture had a goal and an assist, Martin Jones made 28 saves and the Sharks thrived on the road again, beating the Ducks 3-2 Saturday night to take a 2-0 lead in their first-round playoff series.

Marcus Sorensen and Tomas Hertl also scored for the Sharks, who gave another disciplined, organized performance while moving halfway to their first playoff series victory since their Stanley Cup Final run in 2016.

”Nothing we haven’t taken before,” Sharks captain Joe Pavelski said of the Ducks’ physical style. ”Maybe they are coming a little bit harder. Be poised. Make some plays. Stick to what we are trying to do.”

They’re not leaving Orange County without bruises, however: The Ducks attempted to make up for their listlessness in Game 1 with a series of big hits early in the rematch. Nick Ritchie, Hampus Lindholm and Francois Beauchemin all delivered early on, with Lindholm sending Game 1 hero Evander Kane to the bench with a mouth injury from an open-ice shoulder check.

The Ducks kept up that pressure until the final minutes, when Corey Perry clobbered Melker Karlsson with 3:43 to play. Instead of getting mad, the Sharks took the power play and salted away the win.

”We didn’t shrink Jason Witten Jersey ,” Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said. ”We stood in there. That’s one thing about our group: We don’t get pushed out of games. We didn’t ask the referees to fix it. We stood in there and came out of the first period up 2-1.”

Game 3 is Monday night in the Shark Tank.

Lindholm had a goal and an assist for the Ducks, who are leaving Honda Center with an 0-2 series deficit for the third time in their last five playoff series. Jakob Silfverberg scored in the opening minute and John Gibson stopped 32 shots as Anaheim dropped to 3-6 in its last nine home playoff games overall.

”I know the resolve in our room,” Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. ”I guarantee you we’re not going to lay down. We made some mistakes and basically gave them goals. When you gift things in the playoffs, you’re usually going to end up on the wrong side of the score.”

Anaheim undeniably showed more resolve and creativity than in its series-opening defeat, but its scorers still couldn’t crack Jones and the San Jose defense when it counted. The Sharks’ late-season slump hasn’t hurt their ability to rise in the postseason, while the Ducks have retained little momentum from their ferocious second-half surge in the regular season.

But after getting shut out two days earlier, the Ducks scored on their first shot of Game 2. Just 40 seconds in, Silfverberg flung a long shot past a few defenders and got his 18th career postseason goal past Jones, who didn’t appear to read it well.

The Sharks still evened it midway through the period when Brenden Dillon shot the puck off the back boards and it caromed perfectly to Sorensen at the far post for the tap-in. Couture then put San Jose ahead with a slick power-play score, badly faking Gibson before sliding home his 31st career playoff goal.

Honda Center grumbled when Hertl put the Sharks up 3-1 early in the second, and the Ducks finally responded with their first sustained stretch of control. Lindholm trimmed the deficit with a nasty wrist shot during a power play, and Perry barely missed tying it up moments later with his shot off the post.

”We have some strong shifts Mark Walton Jersey , then we take a couple off,” Ducks defenseman Brandon Montour said. ”We have some lapses, and they capitalized on those.”

NOTES: Joe Thornton sat out again for San Jose. The 38-year-old center hasn’t played since Jan. 23 after having right knee surgery. … D Kevin Bieksa returned to the Ducks’ lineup for his 86th career playoff game. He missed the past month recovering from hand surgery. … Ducks D Cam Fowler missed his sixth straight game with a shoulder injury. He isn’t likely to return for this series, depriving Anaheim of its top defenseman.

Doug Pederson was too close to Andy Reid to get fan approval when the Philadelphia Eagles hired him to replace Chip Kelly.

Pederson was Reid’s first starting quarterback in Philadelphia back in 1999 when he groomed rookie Donovan McNabb. Then Pederson served as an assistant coach under Reid for seven seasons with the Eagles and Chiefs.

Because Reid never won the Big One – he’s the winningest coach in franchise history and led Philadelphia to five NFC title games and a Super Bowl loss in 14 seasons between 1999-2012 – fans didn’t want his protege.

Adam Gase and Ben McAdoo were popular choices during the 2016 coaching search, but Gase went to Miami and McAdoo stayed with the Giants. The Eagles even considered Tom Coughlin, but chose Pederson instead.

Gase is 16-17 in two seasons in Miami. McAdoo was fired already. Other coaches hired that year: Hue Jackson is 1-31 in Cleveland; Dirk Koetter is 14-18 in Tampa Bay; Tennessee fired Mike Mularkey on Monday; and San Francisco fired Chip Kelly after one season.

Even longtime NFL executive Mike Lombardi was critical of Pederson after he led the Eagles to a 7-9 record in his first season.

”Everybody knows Pederson isn’t a head coach,” Lombardi said before this season started. ”He might be less qualified to coach a team than anyone I’ve ever seen in my 30-plus years in the NFL.”

Lombardi finally admitted he was wrong, but it wasn’t until Pederson guided the Eagles to a 15-10 victory over Atlanta in the divisional playoff game.

”I’m wrong,” Lombardi said on his podcast afterward. ”Doug Pederson was way better than I thought he was going to be in terms of his ability to lead that team. …. For me, when you win a playoff game and you beat a team you’re an underdog to, and you beat Matt Ryan and Nick Foles played well, I think you deserve it. I think I was wrong on how far I went with Doug. I’m not sure if he’s a great coach Leonard Fournette Jersey , but I was wrong in terms of how far I went with it.”

Pederson lost MVP candidate Carson Wentz, nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters, playmaking linebacker Jordan Hicks, return specialist Darren Sproles, and special-teams captain Chris Maragos. Yet his team tied a franchise record with 13 wins, earned the NFC’s No. 1 seed, and now is one win away from the Super Bowl.

The Eagles (14-3) host the Minnesota Vikings (14-3) on Sunday in the NFC championship game. Once again, Philadelphia is a home underdog.

Pederson doesn’t care about public opinion.

”I don’t pay much attention to it,” he said earlier in the season. ”I’m focused on this football team, this roster, these guys.”

Pederson is popular in the locker room. He spent 10 seasons in the NFL mainly as a backup quarterback with Miami, Green Bay Sam Acho Jersey , Philadelphia and Cleveland. He consults with a council of players to make sure any issues are handled. After holding walk-through practices before the final regular-season game, players wanted to put pads on during the bye week. They told Pederson and he quickly agreed.

”He relates to us,” safety Corey Graham said. ”He knows exactly what we’re going through in certain situations. We want to play for a guy like that who understands you and wants to help you.”

Pederson didn’t have much of a coaching pedigree before owner Jeffery Lurie took a chance on him. He was the offensive coordinator his last three seasons in Kansas City, but Reid usually called the plays. Pederson, unlike Reid, prefers a more-balanced offense. The Eagles run the ball more now than they did under Reid. Pederson also is aggressive. He likes to go on fourth down. Against the Falcons, LeGarrette Blount ran in from the 1 on fourth down to give the Eagles a 6-3 lead early in the second quarter.

”He’s unorthodox at times in a good way,” offensive coordinator Frank Reich said. ”There is an art to play calling and Doug has had a phenomenal year calling plays.”

The Boston Bruins appear to be quite ready for the playoffs.

And the Tampa Bay Lightning are slumping at the wrong time of the season.

The top two teams in the Eastern Conference slugged it out Thursday night and Boston prevailed Deion Sanders Jersey , knocking Tampa Bay out of first place for the first time since October with a 4-2 win on Thursday night.

”This definitely had a playoff feel to it,” said Brand Marchand, whose empty-net goal with 56 seconds left sealed it for the Bruins, who took over first place in the conference with less than two weeks remaining in the regular season.

”Obviously we all know how big it was for the standings and what it meant for both teams. So it was great to see the guys react the way they did and have the game we did.”

Patrice Bergeron had a goal and two assists, Tim Schaller and David Pastrnak scored goals 32 seconds apart in the final minute of the first period and Tuukka Rask made 26 saves for the Bruins, who have 107 points and lead Tampa Bay by a point.

Boston has six games remaining in the regular season to five for Tampa Bay.

For the first time since Oct. 18, a team other than the Lightning leads the Eastern Conference.

”I think it means that we’ve been playing pretty good hockey the last couple of months,” said Rask Damien Wilson Jersey , who also helped set the emotional tone by unloading a flurry of punches on Tampa Bay’s Cory Conacher during a scrum in the second.

It was one of many times in the game that postseason implications were apparent, including a rare fight for Pastrnak in the third period and several more battles before the officials had to separate both sides one final time – after the third-period buzzer.

”There was a ton of passion,” Tampa Bay’s Alex Killorn said. ”There was a lot of hits and a lot of scrums after the whistle. It seems like it could potentially be a playoff matchup. It definitely had a playoff atmosphere tonight.”

J.T. Miller scored a power-play goal for Tampa Bay in the second and Victor Hedman added a goal in the third. Andrei Vasilevskiy finished with 26 saves for the Lightning, who have lost three straight and are 0-3 against the Bruins this season.

”Playing in here is always difficult,” Killorn said. ”The second and third period, I think we did a pretty good job. We created a lot more opportunities for ourselves.”

Killorn had an apparent goal waved off in the third when a teammate was in the crease with Boston leading 2-1. A few minutes later, Torey Krug passed to Bergeron at the side of the net for a goal to put Boston up 3-1 at 11:59 of the third.

The Lightning cut it to 3-2 when Hedman beat Rask through his legs with 6:06 remaining in the third, but Marchand’s empty-netter sealed it and Boston took over the top spot in the division and conference.

”It was a big win for us. Finally we jumped them after a whole season chasing them Brandon Allen Jersey ,” Pastrnak said.

The Bruins outshot the Lightning 17-6 in the first period and took a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the final minute.

Schaller put Boston up 1-0 after stealing the puck from Ryan McDonagh just inside the blue line and started a 2-on-1 break with Tommy Wingels, who got off a shot as Schaller crashed the net and poked in the rebound.

Killorn took an interference penalty with 31 seconds remaining and Pastrnak scored 5 seconds into the penalty, putting the Bruins up 2-0 with 26 seconds left in the period.

The game paused for a few minutes with 8:44 left in the second after Rask took a few shots at Conacher when he was slow to get up after getting tangled with Brandon Carlo in the crease.

Rask landed several punches with his glove before players from both teams jumped in and were eventually separated.

Vasilevskiy skated toward the other end, but was cut off at the blue line by referee Francois St. Laurent, who kept the Tampa Bay goalie from entering the fray. Boston fans roared their approval by shouting ”Tuuuuuuuuk!” throughout the altercation.

Later in the second, it was Pastrnak stepping in after a hit on Bergeron and squaring off with Tampa Bay’s Dan Girardi. Pastrnak said it was his first fight and his inexperience showed when Girardi quickly took him down, but the Bruins appreciated his effort.

      ”I don’t think I’ve fought ever – like ever,” he said. ”I’m a pretty calm-down guy.”

Corey Coleman is a Bill now, after Cleveland traded the disappointing former first-rounder for a 2020 seventh-round pick.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Coleman reported to the Bills after “pondering his options.”

It shouldn’t have taken long, as the options were A) play football for the Bills or B) get a job. There’s also the small matter that C) Coleman has already declared himself “ready to rock with the Bills.”

The Browns were effectively giving Coleman away and the Bills merely took him, so it’s not as if he had any leverage in the process. The Memphis Grizzlies have signed first-round draft pick Jaren Jackson Jr. Kavon Frazier Jersey , a 6-foot-11 forward from Michigan State.

Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

Jackson, the fourth overall pick in the draft, averaged 10.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 21.8 minutes in his lone season at Michigan State. His 3.03 blocks per game ranked seventh nationally.

Jackson and former Ohio State center Greg Oden are the only Big Ten players ever to be named the conference’s freshman of the year and defensive player of the year in the same season.

Boston Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron was back on the ice on the team’s off-day, and coach Bruce Cassidy said it will be a game-day decision whether he plays in Game 5 against Toronto on Saturday night.

”We won’t rule him out and we won’t say he’s definitely in,” the coach said during the team’s off-day availability on Friday. ”But it is a positive he’s back on the ice.”

Bergeron missed Game 4 on Thursday with an undisclosed injury – a surprise to the Maple Leafs Vontae Davis Jersey , who had no warning he was hurt. The Bruins won 3-1 in Toronto to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven first-round series.

While there was no on-ice workout for the rest of the team Friday, Bergeron skated with a backup goalie and a coach at the practice facility. He did not show any impairment.

Cassidy stressed that even though the Bruins have a cushion in the series that would have no impact on when Bergeron returns.

”The last game, 90 percent of the time, is the hardest one,” Cassidy said. ”I can pretty much tell you if he’s cleared to play he’ll be in the lineup. But that’s a medical decision that he has to be comfortable with as well.”

”Unfortunately or fortunately, we’ve had to go to that a little bit in the regular season,” defenseman Adam McQuaid said. ”So it wasn’t a totally new situation for us.”

Bergeron had had five assists in the first two games of the playoffs, centering a line with Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak that tallied 20 points in the two Bruins wins. After losing Game 3 with the top line held scoreless Will Fuller V Jersey , Marchand scored a goal and Pastrnak had two assists playing with center Riley Nash on Thursday.

”They played without him for a while when he broke his foot there and they continued to just keep on rolling,” Maple Leafs defenseman Ron Hainsey said. ”I’m certain they’d rather have him in there. He’s the best player on the ice most nights he’s out there. … It wasn’t like we were doing cartwheels in here when they were missing him. We didn’t think we were going to have an easy night. Seahawks safety Earl Thomas is not happy with his contract Jarius Wright Jersey , and there has been talk all offseason that he could get dealt to the Cowboys. That talk is not going away.

The latest comments come from Bryan Broaddus, a writer for the Cowboys’ website, who said on 105.3 The Fan that there’s still a possibility Thomas could end up in Dallas.

“The Cowboys have to look at their situation at safety and figure out is this going to be good enough? Are we able to compete for a division? To get in the playoffs? Could Earl Thomas be a guy, could he be a difference maker?,” Broaddus said, via the Dallas Morning News. “I feel like that the Earl Thomas situation still is in play. It’s just a matter of where Seattle is going to be. I don’t believe Earl Thomas is going to sit out games for Seattle. I really, really don’t. You’re talking about a guy that makes over $10 million. Players just don’t leave those checks on the field just for principal, for that reason. I think that Seattle is going to have to figure out something. The Cowboys are going to have to figure out something. And maybe they do work something out there.”

Reports came out during the draft that the Cowboys and Seahawks discussed a trade Jeremiah George Jersey , but that the Cowboys wouldn’t give up the second-round pick the Seahawks were seeking. That still sounds like too steep a price, but perhaps something could be worked out to get Thomas in Dallas.

Clayton Richard says the San Diego Padres now have enough punch to make late-game comebacks.

That offense has the Padres playing like they can escape last place in the NL West.

Hunter Renfroe hit a go-ahead, two-run single in San Diego’s five-run seventh inning, Freddy Galvis had a three-run homer and went 5 for 5, and the Padres beat the Atlanta Braves 9-3 on Friday night.

”I think we have the ability to add late at the plate and that’s huge,” Richard said, adding newcomers Galvis and Eric Hosmer ”add such professionalism. They’re not going to give in. That definitely has carried over to other players.”

The Padres, who have split the first two games of the four-game series Marshall Newhouse Jersey , are trying to win their sixth straight series.

Richard (6-6) allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits in six innings. Luis Castillo closed the game with two scoreless innings.

Freddie Freeman’s 15th homer gave Atlanta a 3-2 lead in the fifth. Jose Pirela hit a two-run homer for San Diego in the first.

Sam Freeman (1-3) gave up three runs in the seventh.

Before Renfroe’s single, the Padres were on the verge of wasting a bases-loaded, no-out opportunity for the second time in the game.

Pirela grounded into a double play in which pinch-runner Cory Spangenberg was forced out at the plate.

Renfroe then hit Freeman’s 1-2 pitch up the middle , driving in Travis Jankowski and Eric Hosmer.

Galvis added a three-run homer just beyond the reach of leaping centerfielder Ender Inciarte, off Peter Moylan.

”We walked too many guys in that inning,” said Braves manager Brian Snitker Isaac Yiadom Jersey , referring to passes issued by Sam Freeman and Moylan.

Galvis had a run-scoring single, giving him four RBIs, in the ninth. The five hits were a career high.

Brandon McCarthy allowed two runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Home plate umpire Joe West ejected Padres manager Andy Green in the fourth after arguing West’s changed call on an apparent strikeout by Ozzie Albies. West initially clinched his right fist as if to call Albies out. He then changed his mind, apparently thinking Albies tipped the ball – which was not caught by catcher Raffy Lopez before it hit the dirt.

Green argued and was headed back to the dugout when he was tossed by West. Green then turned back toward the plate and threw his cap in the general direction of West before engaging the umpire in a more spirited argument. First-base umpire Doug Eddings eventually stepped between Green and West and helped to point the manager back toward the dugout.

”I think I’ve said absolutely everything I want to say about umpires,” Green said.

It was the second straight game Green had issues with an umpire’s call. He was upset after a video review confirmed Tyler Flowers was hit by a pitch in the Braves’ 4-2 win on Thursday night.

It was the Braves’ turn to complain in the ninth when a video review failed to overturn a safe call on Renfroe’s slide at second base. Umpires ruled shortstop Dansby Swanson failed to touch second base before throwing to first on Castillo’s grounder.

      TRAINER’S ROOM

Padres: After throwing four hitless innings in a rehab start Thursday night for Class-A Lake Elsinore, LHP Joey Lucchesi (right hip strain) will throw a bullpen session on Saturday which will determine if he’s ready to come off the DL. Lucchesi, who has been out since May 15, could start on Tuesday or Wednesday against Oakland Steve Atwater Jersey , or he could make another rehab start.

Braves: RHP Mike Foltynewicz, who left Saturday’s start with triceps tightness, felt good after playing catch. The team won’t make a decision about his next start until he throws off a mound. … OF Ronald Acuna Jr. (left knee sprain) ran the bases and took grounders and fly balls in left field. He will test the knee by running harder on Saturday.

      HOT HITTER

Freddie Freeman’s homer gave him hits in 25 of his last 26 games. He leads the NL with his .342 batting average and 90 hits. He also ranks among the league leaders with his 15 homers and 49 RBIs. He has hit eight homers off left-handers.

      FULL HOUSE

Attendance was 41,497, Atlanta’s fourth sellout of the season.

      UP NEXT

Padres: RHP Jordan Lyles will make his eighth start of the season – his high mark since 10 starts with Colorado in 2015 – as the four-game series continues on Saturday.

Braves: LHP Sean Newcomb will look for his eighth win as he makes his second start of the season against the Padres. He pitched six scoreless innings in a 14-1 win at San Diego on June 5.

More than three months after the NFL draft Clark Harris Jersey , Oakland Raiders defensive tackle Maurice Hurst is still a little bitter about how things played out.

Projected to be a sure first-rounder after his final season at Michigan, Hurst wasn't selected until the fifth round amid questions about his health stemming from a heart condition that also got him sent home from the scouting combine.

Although Hurst said he first learned of the issue during his freshman year in college, he was stunned not hearing his name called until the third day of the draft.

He's still not fully over it.

"I don't know if it ever goes away," Hurst said Friday. "It's just something that's always on your shoulder and something that you always have to carry with you. Just keep it there to push you harder."

The Raiders are counting on Hurst and second-round pick P.J. Hall to improve an interior pass rush that was almost non-existent last season. Both rookies have gotten work in with the starting defense during practices and will get an extensive look when preseason games begin next week.

"They don't want us to be rookies," Hurst said. "They want us to come out and play right away and play effectively Leonard Fournette Jersey , and come out and just dominate and do what they expected us to do. Just be a vital part of this defense."

Hurst had 12 陆 sacks in college, five coming as a senior when he was an All-American.

With the Raiders, he'll be part of a rotation up front that includes Hall and veterans Justin Ellis and Mario Edwards. Eddie Vanderdoes, a second-round pick in 2017 who started 13 games as a rookie, is recovering from ACL surgery.

To help accelerate his growth Brendan Langley Jersey , the Raiders have had Hurst play against starting center Rodney Hudson and guards Kelechi Osemele and Gabe Jackson. Hudson and Osemele were Pro Bowl picks last season while Jackson was an alternate in 2016.

"They throw a few crumbs every now and then," Hurst said. "They don't want you to beat them every time. But they've been extremely helpful. Every day I get to go to work I get to play the best guys in the country. That's only going to make you better every day."

Hudson said Hurst's natural instincts have made for a smooth transition.

"He's got a lot of ability," Hudson said. "Smart rusher. He's always attentive and asks questions. He's got a lot of God-given ability. He's quick and he uses his hands well to be so young."

Hurst showed all of that during a pass-rush drill Friday. Paired against two offensive linemen, Hurst burst through the middle of the double-team effort and used his right hand to knock away one defender's block attempt.

If only finding a place to live was that easy for the Raiders rookie.

Hurst admitted getting sticker shock while checking out the housing market in Northern California and joked that he might have to go back to driving for Uber, something he did in college to earn extra money.

"It's ridiculous Corey Grant Jersey ," Hurst said. "Look here, look home, look Michigan. I'm like, 'I can get a nice place over there.' But over here you get a little box. There was one on Craigslist I saw that someone was renting out a closet for $400."

Notes: Jackson was held out of practice for unknown reasons, one day after leaving the workout early. . Left tackle Donald Penn Golden Tate III Jersey , who has not practiced in camp yet after having offseason foot surgery, appears close to returning. Penn has been working out with a team trainer and got work in on a blocking sled.

A federal judge has denied a law firm's request to be added as an administrator of the NFL's estimated $1 billion concussion settlement.

U.S. District Judge Anita Brody rejected an attempt from the Locks Law Firm to join the process that compensates former players for head injuries they sustained during their careers. The firm had claimed that the process was going too slowly.

In a two-page order issued Wednesday, Brody said existing administrator Seeger Weiss has done a "fine job."

The settlement resolved thousands of lawsuits that accused the NFL of hiding what it knew about the risks of repeated concussions. Players who suffer from Lou Gehrig's disease, dementia or other neurological problems linked to head trauma could receive as much as $5 million apiece.

Nearly 400 claims that could pay out more than $416 million have already been approved.

Attorney Christopher Seeger told The Associated Press that his goal is to hold the NFL accountable.

An NFL spokesman declined to comment.

ATLANTA — The San Diego Padres know they won’t be getting many innings from their first pitcher on Sunday. The Atlanta Braves hope that isn’t the case with their starter as well.

Atlanta right-hander Julio Teheran will make his first start since being activated from the disabled list Saturday to face San Diego Kyle Long Jersey , which will use a bullpen game in the finale of the four-game series at SunTrust Park.

The Braves (41-29) increased their lead in the National League East to 2 1/2 games with a 1-0 victory on Saturday that guaranteed the Padres (34-39) wouldn’t win a sixth consecutive series.

Teheran (4-4, 4.31 ERA) came out after one batter in the fifth inning of a loss at San Diego on June 4 because of a right thumb contusion and hopes the rest during his DL stint will help him regain some of his lost velocity.

The 27-year-old former all-star gave up three homers while losing his third straight start. His average fastball velocity this season is 89.2 mph compared with 91.4 mph last year.

Even before jamming a finger while batting, Teheran’s fastballs were mostly in the 85-87 mph range against the Padres, and three long balls raised his season total to 14.

“My arm has been sore,” Teheran admitted for the first time last Sunday while the Braves were in Los Angeles playing the Dodgers. “Obviously as a pitcher you have games where you don’t feel 100 percent. This year for me it’s been kind of up and down.”

Teheran is 1-3 with a 6.11 ERA and eight home runs allowed in 28 innings during his past five starts.

“Whenever you’re fighting through soreness, one day you feel good and the next day you don’t. You still go out there and compete,” he said. “I don’t think it’s a big deal. But working on it, we’ll see if this (next) couple of months we’ll get my velo back.”

Right-handed reliever Matt Strahm (1-2, 2.55) will get his fourth spot start for the Padres as manager Andy Green turns to his bullpen to fill in the rotation spot left open by the hip injury to rookie left-hander Joey Lucchesi.

Strahm has a 1.23 ERA in 7 1/3 innings as a starter after throwing three perfect innings in the Padres’ victory over the Cardinals in St. Louis on Tuesday.

Submarine right-hander Adam Cimber followed Strahm with one-hit ball for three scoreless innings and the Padres won their second straight bullpen game after a victory over the Braves on June 6 in San Diego.

“It’s got to be tough as a hitter,” Green said. “First, you have a lefty slinger throwing 95-96 (mph). Next at-bat, you’ve got a drop-down righty coming from underneath. It’s just two radically different looks, and it plays well off each other and keeps guys uncomfortable. By the time you’re up a third time, you’re facing a back-end reliever.”

Strahm pitched a perfect inning in relief against the Braves two days before his start in San Diego, when he allowed a first-inning homer by Freddie Freeman but only one other hit in 2 1/3 innings of the 3-1 win by the Padres.

Teheran’s 11-4 loss in San Diego gave him a 4-3 record and 4.13 ERA in nine career starts against the Padres.

LeBron James emerged from a chaotic, complex season unscathed – better than ever.

      Still the NBA’s undisputed king.

Despite no longer having Kyrie Irving at his side. Despite an injury-riddled season in which the Cavaliers‘ roster morphed twice and despite being surrounded by a supporting cast that included rookies and just three holdovers from Cleveland teams he dragged to three straight NBA Finals, James played every game and powered through his 15th pro season like it was another helpless defender in the lane.

By investing millions into maintaining his body and with a work ethic that has pushed him since childhood Chad Kelly Jersey , James seems intent on challenging basketball’s natural cycle of aging.

At 33, and on the eve of making a run at his eighth straight Finals, James is not slowing down. He remains the game’s best all-around player, most dominant force. Still, the one to beat. Still, the player most capable of carrying a team to playoff victories. Still, the most likely player – sorry Messrs. Westbrook, Harden, Curry and Durant – to make a play that wins a game or a series.

”It doesn’t seem like he gets old,” said Philadelphia 76ers coach Brett Brown. ”He just doesn’t go away.”

While Cleveland’s season was highly irregular, James had another brilliant one.

He averaged 27.5 points – his highest total since 2010 – and established career-highs in assists (9.1), rebounds (8.6) and played the full slate of games for the first time. He led the league in total points, minutes played, surpassed 30,000 career points, recorded 18 triple-doubles and was the league’s second-leading scorer in the fourth quarter (7.5 points).

The three-time champion also extended his record of scoring at least 10 points to 873 games, a mark once owned by Michael Jordan (862) T. J. Carrie Jersey , the player James has spent his entire adulthood being compared to and the one he has equaled on many measures.

Jordan was not done at 33, winning three more titles. But his game aged differently. Jordan relied more on jumpers as he got older and ceded tough defensive assignments to other Bulls. James continues to take over games physically, particularly late, and he never hesitates to defend the opponents’ toughest scorers. And the Bulls never counted on their general to rebound or dish out assists as the Cavs lean on James.

James has done it all amid a strange, soap-opera-like season for Cleveland, which endured injuries, illnesses, trades and tribulations from late last summer until early spring.

”As the Land Turns is what I call it,” said Cavs coach Tyronn Lue, who returned from an illness just last week.

Following Wednesday’s regular-season finale, James stamped this as-yet-unfinished season a personal triumph.

”It’s the best I’ve felt all season and I’ve got the numbers to back it up and I’ve got the wins to back it up as well,” he said. ”I’ve just tried to be available to my teammates every single night and do everything that I could to win ball games. Either by scoring, by rebounding, by defending, by assisting, taking charges, whatever the case may be. Statistically it all speaks for itself.”

While amassing those numbers William Jackson Jersey , James has seemingly paused the aging process. Of course, it helps that he has a nutritionist, personal trainer, masseuse, cryogenic chamber and 21st century technology to keep him one step ahead of Father Time.

Cavaliers forward Kendrick Perkins, who was drafted in 2003 after James, is awed by his friend’s commitment and dedication. Perkins was stunned to learn James invests upward of $2 million per year on his body.

”It’s crazy. I watch how he takes care of his body, I watch how he gets treatment around the clock,” said Perkins. ”But it shows and that’s why he’s able to do what he’s been doing at this age. Everybody will be like, `Man, `Bron got to be doing something,’ and I’m like, `No, he actually put in the groundwork and everything you see is because he sacrificed.’ It’s amazing to watch.”

James isn’t done, not even close, and earlier this season he described re-writing the narrative that players in their early 30s have reached their prime.

”Hopefully I can break the mold, so when the next guy comes Dawuane Smoot Jersey , he can still get $200 or $300 million and be 33 years old,” he said. ”I’m serious. This is the mold I’m trying to break. It’s not just about me, it’s for the next crew. I want it all.”

And what James wants, he usually gets.

He has meticulously worked at his craft, refining his game, adding weapons. This season, James posted a career-high in 3-pointers, and according to Basketball-Reference.com , he made a higher percentage of shots from beyond 28 feet than any player – including Stephen Curry – since 2001.

As far as Brown’s concerned, James is the new standard.

”I don’t see any decline athletically and then watch it, the trend that he’s now shooting and making 3s, so you feel that he just keeps getting better,” Brown said before James scored 44 with 11 rebounds and 11 assists against the Sixers. ”The fact that he can play that many minutes, that many games, seemingly not missing a beat. He is amazing.

”In my opinion, he is the best player to have ever played our sport. And he just keeps getting better. And I say that with tremendous respect to lots of other people. That’s a hell of a comment that I don’t throw out recklessly. And I just feel like his body of work makes me feel very confident and comfortable saying that. Womens Sam Hubbard Jersey ,

The Bengals turned back to offense in the fourth round of the draft Teez Tabor Jersey , filling their need for a backup running back.

They picked up Mark Walton from Miami with the 112th overall pick. He missed most of last season with an injured right ankle.

Although the Bengals’ main focus on offense has been fixing the line, they also needed a running back. Jeremy Hill signed with New England after the season Josh Shaw Jersey , leaving Joe Mixon as the featured back. Giovani Bernard returns for his sixth season. Walton is 5-foot-10 and reminds the Bengals of Bernard.

One big attraction: Walton played on Miami’s kickoff and punt coverage teams, so he can fit on special teams immediately.

Any 49ers coaching points involving cornerback Richard Sherman this week will not come from on-field work.

Sherman hurt his hamstring during Friday’s practice and the team announced Cameron Artis-Payne Jersey , via Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, that he will sit out this week in order to recover. That means Sherman will not suit up for the team’s preseason opener against the Cowboys, although it wasn’t certain he would have done much in that game if healthy.

The plan is for Sherman to “progress back” next week, so he may not be in the lineup for the second preseason game either.

Guard Joshua Garnett will also miss the preseason opener as he continues to deal with a knee injury. Defensive lineman Arik Armstead (hamstring), linebacker Brock Coyle (hip) and offensive lineman JP Flynn (knee) are also set to miss this week’s work for the Niners.

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Blues‘ loss to the Washington Capitals on Monday night has provided the team clarity for the final three games of the season. It’s win or go home.

“We understand where we’re at and we know what we have to do to win,” Blues defenseman Colton Parayko told nhl.com. “We’ve done it last week Andre Holmes Jersey , the last couple of weeks, and it’s going to be a good couple tests against Chicago and then Colorado to finish it out. We know basically we’re in a win-out situation so it’s going to be a good challenge for us and we’re looking forward to it.

“I know it’s tough to turn the page quickly but that’s what we have to do and make sure that we’re ready.”

After winning six straight to climb into the playoff picture, the Blues (43-30-6, 92 points) have lost their last three and are one point behind the Colorado Avalanche (42-29-9, 93 points) for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference.

The Blues and Avalanche end their regular season at Colorado on Saturday, which could ultimately decide who is in and who is out. But first the Blues will likely need to win a home and home against the Chicago Blackhawks Devontae Booker Jersey , which starts at Scottrade Center on Wednesday night.

If Colorado loses at San Jose on Thursday night, St. Louis can afford to split the two games with the Blackhawks and still get in.

“There’s not a single part of me that doesn’t believe that we’re still going to get there,” Blues coach Mike Yeo told nhl.com. “It’s our job now as coaches to make sure that the players match that feeling.”

St. Louis’ situation could have been direr had the Los Angeles Kings not beaten Colorado 3-1 on Monday. The positive feelings from the reprieve were noticeable at the Blues’ practice on Tuesday morning.

“For me, everything is about tomorrow,” Yeo told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch following the skate. “Move on. We have to look at, and we talked about Ryan Kelly Jersey , what we didn’t do well enough to win the hockey game yesterday and what we need to do better to win the game tomorrow.”

The Blues have won both meetings against the Blackhawks this season, including a 5-4 comeback overtime win in Chicago on March 18.

The Blackhawks (32-37-10, 74 points) are coming off a 5-0 drubbing at Colorado on Friday. Chicago might be playing out the string but would love to play spoiler to their longtime rivals.

“St. Louis being a big rival, these next two games on the road and at home here will be pretty intense games and the crowd will be into it,” Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane told Blackhawks TV. “It would be nice to see them miss the playoffs so it would be nice to have a hand in that.”

Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville confirmed following the team’s skate on Tuesday that center Jonathan Toews (upper body) was out for Wednesday’s game, but could still play in the rematch in Chicago on Friday.

Chicago announced Monday that they have recalled goaltender Jeff Glass on an emergency basis from the American Hockey League’s Rockford IceHogs and assigned goaltender Collin Delia to Rockford.

Even if the Blues do get into the playoffs Xavier Woods Jersey , they will be without defenseman Carl Gunnarsson, who underwent surgery to repair a tear in his left ACL on Tuesday. Gunnarsson was injured March 23. He will be re-evaluated in six months.
