William Nylander and Auston Matthews each had two goals and an assist as the playoff-bound Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-2 on Monday night.

Andreas Johnsson also scored as Maple Leafs extended a franchise record with their 48th win and matched the team mark for points (103) set in 2003-04. Backup goalie Curtis McElhinney stopped 32 shots to help Toronto win for the 15th time in the last 17 at home.

Matthews extended his point streak to seven games in Toronto’s 28th home win of the season. He has five goals and 10 points on his run.

Sam Reinhart got his career-high 24th goal for the last-place Sabres Saquon Barkley Jersey , and Jason Pominville also scored. Chad Johnson finished with 31 saves.

      KINGS 3, AVALANCHE 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Dustin Brown’s short-handed goal helped Los Angeles move back into third place in the Pacific Division with a win over Colorado.

Torrey Mitchell and Kyle Clifford also scored for the Kings, who are one point ahead of Anaheim. Jonathan Quick made 27 saves and the Kings won their third consecutive home game.

Alexander Kerfoot had a power-play goal and Jonathan Bernier stopped 22 shots for the Avalanche.

Colorado leads St. Louis by one point for the second Western Conference wild card, but the Blues have a game in hand. The Avalanche host the Blues on Saturday in the final game of the regular season for both.

      PANTHERS 3, HURRICANES 2

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) – Alexander Petrovic scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period and Florida snapped a three-game skid.

Evgenii Dadonov and MacKenzie Weegar also scored to help the Panthers pull five points behind idle New Jersey for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference. Florida has four games remaining, one more than the Devils. Roberto Luongo stopped 26 shots.

Derek Ryan and Trevor van Riemsdyk scored for Carolina, and Scott Darling finished with 32 saves.

On the go-ahead goal Chandler Catanzaro Jersey , Petrovic shot from the boards above the right circle and beat Darling with 7:58 left for his second of the season.

      WILD 3, STARS 0

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – Zach Parise scored twice and Devan Dubnyk made 22 saves to blank his original team, pushing Minnesota to the brink of the playoffs.

Playing for the first time in nearly three years without stalwart defenseman Ryan Suter, the Wild wrapped up their home schedule with a postseason-caliber performance punctuated by a staggering 21-3 shots advantage in the third period. Joel Eriksson Ek added an empty-net goal as the Wild finished 27-6-8 at Xcel Energy Center, currently the second-best home record in the NHL.

Cam Talbot made 37 saves for the Oilers, who lost their fifth straight game and ensured a sub-80-point finish for the eighth time in the nine years.

The Wild reached 98 points to match the fourth-most in franchise history.

      CAPITALS 4, BLUES 2

Alex Ovechkin got his league-leading 46th goal, and Alex Chiasson and Andre Burakovsky also scored for the Capitals. Holtby won for the fourth time in his last five starts, and improved to 7-0-0 in seven career starts against St. Louis.

Vladimir Tarasenko and Patrik Berglund scored for the Blues, who lost their second straight. Jake Allen finished with 30 saves.

      JETS 6, SENATORS 5

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) – Blake Wheeler scored twice and Winnipeg held off Ottawa.

Andrew Copp had a goal and an assist, and Josh Morrissey Nick Boyle Jersey , Brandon Tanev and Mathieu Perreault also scored for the Jets, who pulled five points behind first-place Nashville in the Central Division with three games remaining. Adam Lowry and Mark Scheifele each had two assists, and Connor Hellebuyck stopped 32 shots.

Thomas Chabot and Matt Duchene each scored twice and Christian Wolanin got his first NHL goal for Ottawa, which was playing its final home game of the season. Craig Anderson finished with 34 saves.

So why is Terry McAulay abruptly retiring from his gig as an NFL referee? According to Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com, McAulay will become the rules analyst for NBC’s Sunday Night Football.

Asked by PFT — which falls under the NBC umbrella — for comment, NBC declined. (As I’ve said time and again, they only wake me up for the unimportant meetings.)

Seifert also reports that others auditioned for the gig, including referee Clete Blakeman. Which means Jared Cook Jersey , obviously, that Blakeman would have retired/resigned, if he’d gotten the job.

Blakeman joins Jeff Triplette as the latest former NFL officials turned rules analysts. It remains to be seen whether they’ll be more like Mike Pereira (who is excellent) or more like Mike Carey (who was not).

This year, the position becomes arguably more important than ever, given the changes to the catch rule and the kickoff formation. Likewise, the new rule prohibiting players from lowering their helmets to initiate contact may necessitate plenty of explanations.

Elvis Andrus is back in the Texas lineup after his first trip to the disabled list.

Andrus Robert Alford Jersey , a two-time All-Star for the Rangers, was activated Monday for the series opener against the Kansas City Royals. He missed 59 games after a pitch by Kenyan Middleton broke his right elbow in an April 11 game against the Los Angeles Angels.

He had been inactive for only three of the Rangers’ 1,515 games since making his debut on opening day in 2009. He was suspended for a 2016 game and was on the paternity list for two games in 2017.

”He’s never gone through this,” Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. ”He’s never not played in 10 years. This is the first time.”

Texas went 25-34 without Andrus, who hit .327 with two home runs and five RBIs in 14 games before the injury.

”A guy that has played 10 consecutive years you don’t replace,” Banister said. ”You miss everything he does and what he was able to do. He was our three-hole hitter and one of the better centerpieces of the offense. He did a lot of things for us offensively. Obviously, he was one of the leaders with (Adrian) Beltre on defense.”

Andrus went 1-for-24 with three walks in a seven-game rehab assignment in the minors.

Jurickson Profar, who had four RBIs Sunday in the victory over Colorado, started 56 games at shortstop in Andrus’ absence. He started at second on Monday against the Royals, will play third on Tuesday and be the designated hitter Wednesday.

”He played very well,” Banister said. ”He became one of the better hitters in our lineup. I thought he progressively got better defensively.”

He said the plan is to play Rougned Odor, Profar and Beltre five games a week.

In other roster moves Peyton Barber Jersey , the Rangers recalled right-hander Ricardo Rodriguez from Triple-A Round Rock, optioned catcher Jose Trevino to Double-A Frisco and designated for assignment right-hander Dick McGuire, who was claimed off waivers last week from Toronto.

Rookie utility player Isiah Kiner-Falefa will become the backup catcher. He will make his first major league start behind the plate Wednesday. He has started at third base, second base and shortstop.

”He’s earned the right to be here and to do it here,” Banister said.

As a veteran quarterback accustomed to ever-changing roles, there’s little Ryan Fitzpatrick hasn’t experienced during a 14-year NFL career.

He’s been a starter and a backup – several times.

Now, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are counting on him to help them weather Jameis Winston’s three-game suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

And then head back to the bench.

”I thought I had seen and been through it all,” said Fitzpatrick, who’s entering his second season with his seventh pro team. ”But another year, another different situation.”

Not that the 35-year-old is complaining.

Fitzpatrick signed with Tampa Bay before last season, knowing coach Dirk Koetter sought him purely as a backup.

”I’ve learned that you view it as a one-game-at-a-time opportunity. That’s just the way it is in this league,” Fitzpatrick said.

”In 2015 Sony Michel Jersey , when I played with the (New York) Jets, I was a backup and ended up (playing) the whole year with the situation there,” he added. ”In 2016, I was a starter and I ended up getting benched three times. Every year is different. You have to take it game by game and just go from there.”

Fitzpatrick, who turns 36 in November, entered the NFL as a seventh-round draft pick of the St. Louis Rams in 2005.

In addition to the Bucs and Jets, he’s also played for the Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans, completing nearly 60 percent of his passes for 26,991 yards, 173 touchdowns and 136 interceptions.

He’s one of just four players in NFL history – along with Vinny Testaverde Jaquiski Tartt Jersey , Gus Frerotte and Chris Chandler – to throw TD passes with seven different teams.

Winston, suspended following the league’s investigation of an allegation that he groped a female Uber driver during a ride in March 2016, will miss games against New Orleans, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to begin the season.

Fitzpatrick rejected the notion that his role is to ”save the season.”

”The season hasn’t even started yet. … It’s a cliche, but it’s one game at a time. You have to look at it that way,” Fitzpatrick said. ”Not even based off last year, talent-wise, looking at the team we have out here, I’m in the huddle on offense, and it’s a pretty exciting huddle to be in as a quarterback looking at some of those guys.”

With Winston missing three games and portions of two others because of injury, Fitzpatrick went 2-1 as a starter a year ago. Three seasons ago, he threw for a career-best 3 Jaleel Johnson Jersey ,905 yards and 31 TDs with the Jets.

Koetter noted that Fitzpatrick has 119 career starts and said he has total confidence in the veteran’s ability to handle the offense.

”We’re fortunate enough to have him,” Koetter said. ”We saw what he could do when he was our starter last year for three games. There’s no reason for us to be afraid of Ryan playing quarterback for us. He’s going to play fine.”

And Winston, who’s allowed to practice during training camp and play preseason games, intends to do whatever he can help Fitzpatrick and No. 3 quarterback Ryan Griffin, a fifth-year pro who’s never taken a snap in a regular-season game.

”As a teammate first, I understand it’s about this team and I am going to be there for Fitz as much as I can,” Winston, entering his fourth season, said.

”But it’s also about getting Ryan (Griffin) ready as well,” the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner added. ”My influence on this team is going to be positive, and I’m going to be their best support system they have.”

NEW YORK — When Bryce Harper went down the ground for the second time after being hit by a pitch Tuesday night Adam Thielen Jersey , the Washington Nationals feared the worst, especially with how much injuries have impacted them.

It turned out there was not a long-term injury to fear for their superstar, just some initial pain.

After getting hit by pitches in the back of the left elbow and on his left foot Tuesday, Harper is expected to play Wednesday when the Nationals conclude their two-game series with the New York Yankees.

“Oh yeah, he’s in there,” Martinez said.

Harper reached base four times, but it was his final two appearances that caused the most angst for the Nationals, who mustered five hits and opened the series with a 3-0 loss.

In the fifth, he dropped to the ground after being hit on the left elbow by CC Sabathia’s 90.1 mph sinker. Three innings later, an 88.8 mph slider from Dellin Betances hit him on the foot and off his big toe, creating some numbness.

“I was really worried,” Martinez said. “He started walking off the field. The good news is he’s walking off the field, He came in a few minutes ago and said he was fine.”

Harper’s exit occurred on a night when the Nationals tied a franchise record by getting shut out in consecutive games for the 12th time since moving from Montreal following the 2004 season. Their scoreless drought is at 19 innings and they have eight hits in the last two games.

Harper batted third and played right field Tuesday. He batted two spots ahead of Daniel Murphy, who was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in his season debut after missing the first 63 games recovering from right knee surgery.

Murphy started at designated hitter and will likely do so again Wednesday.

“His timing could have been off Raekwon McMillan Jersey ,” Martinez said. “I know he’s going to hit.”

The Yankees opened the series by getting two homers from Didi Gregorius, who has three of their 14 multi-homer games this season. Gregorius homered at home for the first time since April 25 and is hitting .286 (10-for-35) in his last nine games after hitting .151 (14-for-93) in 22 games in May.

While Gregorius is starting to rebound from a tough month, Gary Sanchez is in a massive slump and did not start Tuesday. He is not expected to start Wednesday, giving him three days off.

Sanchez is enduring the first significant struggles of his career and spent time figuring a way out of a prolonged slump that has shrunk his batting average to .190, though the Yankees think he will get rolling again.

“The one thing he never loses is his confidence, because he’s such a gifted hitter,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said before the series opener. “He wants to get in there and get it going; he expects to get it going.”

He is hitless in his last 11 at-bats and is 2-for-29 with 10 strikeouts over his last seven games.

Sanchez has yet to heat up in a season when he started 2-for-36 but on May 19-21 he went 4-for-10 in two games, raising his average to a season-high .231. Since those games, Sanchez is 4-for-53.

“Maybe I’m over-thinking this a little too much, that’s why I’m missing those pitches I usually don’t miss,” Sanchez before Tuesday’s game. “I swung at some pitcher’s pitches. Maybe (I’m a) little bit in between.

“But I feel good. I know if I stay healthy, it won’t reflect what I should be hitting. I’m sure I’ll get through this.”

If Boone started Sanchez Wednesday, it would have been as the designated hitter since Sonny Gray is starting.

During the road trip, Gray allowed one run in 14 innings during wins over Baltimore and Toronto. Against teams with losing records Jordan Mills Jersey , he is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA but against teams with winning records, he is 1-4 with a 7.61 ERA in five outings.

Last Wednesday, Gray turned in his first scoreless start since becoming a Yankee when he allowed two hits in eight innings during a game that Yankees won in the 13th.

Gray made two starts for Oakland Athletics against the Washington Nationals. In those outings, he allowed six runs on 10 hits in 14 innings.

Since Jeremy Hellickson and Stephen Strasburg are on the disabled list, Washington has an opening in its rotation for Wednesday and it will be filled by Erick Fedde, who will be called up from Triple-A Syracuse for his second start this season.

Fedde allowed three runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings as a fill-in starter against the San Diego Padres on May 23. Fedde is 0-2 with an 8.14 ERA in four career starts for the Nationals.

With the Bengals determined to improve an offense that finished last in the league, their new defensive coordinator didn’t expect to be very busy during the draft.

He wound up getting six of the first eight players picked.

Could he have imagined going 6 of 8?

”If I was shooting free throws maybe, but not getting defensive players,” Teryl Austin said.

The Bengals decided they were set for now on offense and turned their draft focus to upgrading a defense that slipped last season. After taking Ohio State center Billy Price with the 21st overall pick, they went defense primarily in the next four rounds.

The Bengals’ defense finished No. 18 overall last season, including 30th against the run, so they weren’t exactly stocking up in an area of strength.

”We’re not sure how different it’s going to be until we get them here and see where they fit,” Austin said. ”That’s going to play out over time. Infusing talent always raises the competition level.”

Some things to note about the Bengals’ defense-heavy draft:

ANOTHER GIO? Running back Mark Walton from Miami was one of the few offensive players picked, going in the fourth round. Although the Bengals’ main focus on offense has been fixing the line http://www.kansascitychiefsteamonline.com/patrick-mahomes-ii-jersey , they also needed a running back to replace Jeremy Hill – Joe Mixon and Giovani Bernard return. Walton is 5-foot-10 and reminds the Bengals of Bernard in size and quickness. One big attraction: Walton played on Miami’s kickoff and punt coverage teams, so he can fit on special teams immediately.

THE REST OF THE CLASS: In the fifth round, Cincinnati took cornerback Davontae Harris from Illinois State, defensive tackle Andrew Brown from Virginia and cornerback Darius Phillips from Western Michigan. The Bengals had no picks in the sixth round. In the seventh, they got quarterback Logan Woodside from Toledo, guard Rod Taylor from Mississippi, and receiver Auden Tate from Florida State.

SETTLED AT QB: The Bengals needed another quarterback after backup AJ McCarron left for Buffalo, and there was a question whether they would try to replace him by taking one in the middle of the draft – they got McCarron in the fifth round in 2014.

Instead, they signed Matt Barkley to a two-year deal last month and decided they were set at the No. 2 spot, waiting until the seventh round to get an extra quarterback.

PAYING ATTENTION: The Bengals will be watching Price closely in the next few months. He had surgery to repair a torn chest muscle after the combine, and he’s expected to be ready for the start of training camp. Last year, the Bengals took receiver John Ross in the first round even though he was recovering from shoulder surgery, and it didn’t turn out well. He played in only three games before another shoulder injury ended his season.

NO PIES: Texas linebacker Malik Jefferson gets free pizza for a year as part of a promotion by an NFL sponsor. Pizza Hut offered free pies to the ”Pi Pick” – third round, 14th choice Linval Joseph Jersey , or 3.14. That was Jefferson. He expected to make an appearance at a local Pizza Hut on Saturday, but it didn’t work out.

”I actually missed the pizza party,” Jefferson said. ”I don’t know how that’s going to work. I’m still working that deal out with my marketing agent.”

O-H: The draft will be remembered locally for the Bengals finally taking some Ohio State players. Even though franchise founder Paul Brown won a national championship at Ohio State, the Bengals had drafted only two Buckeyes in the past 23 years – none higher than the sixth round. Over that same time, they took seven players from Michigan. This year, they took Price and Ohio State defensive end Sam Hubbard in the third round. Price will be practicing across from former Michigan defensive tackle Ryan Glasgow.

”The rivalry is still part of it,” Price said. ”He went to the team up north and I went to Ohio State. We will leave it at that. I remember playing him specifically. The last week in November, we will have a little bet.”

SELLING TICKETS: Bringing Hubbard aboard has already boosted ticket sales. Hubbard grew up in Cincinnati and attended Bengals games regularly.

”My uncle went down and got season tickets right after he found out I’m going (to the Bengals),” Hubbard said.

STILL NEED: Help on the offensive line. They filled the hole at center, but they’re still depending upon young players who have yet to prove themselves. Left tackle Cedric Ogbuehi struggled the past two seasons, prompting the Bengals to get left tackle Cordy Glenn from Buffalo. Right tackle Jake Fisher had a procedure to repair an irregular heartbeat during the season. There’s still work to be done in their biggest problem area.

A judge has dismissed a misdemeanor domestic abuse conviction against former Los Angeles Kings defenseman Slava Voynov Germain Ifedi Jersey , a move that could clear a path for his return to the NHL.

The judge granted Voynov’s request to dismiss his conviction on Monday – over the objection of Los Angeles County prosecutors – three years after he pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of corporal injury to a spouse.

Police said he punched, kicked and choked his wife at their Redondo Beach home in October 2014 after a fight that began at a party attended by other Kings players. He served almost two months in jail and voluntarily agreed to return to Russia after he was taken into custody by U.S. immigration officials.

The Kings terminated Voynov’s $25 million contract in 2015 but with his conviction overturned, he can request a hearing with the NHL commissioner to apply for reinstatement.

Prosecutors opposed Voynov’s request to dismiss his conviction and argued in court papers that it is ”impossible to determine” whether he met all of the conditions of probation after his plea because he returned to Russia.

A doctor told the court that Voynov had completed 28 domestic violence counseling sessions but noted the couple had a ”lack of emotional awareness and difficulty to communicate effectively,” court documents said. The counseling Ray Nitschke Jersey , prosecutors argue, was not sufficient to satisfy the legal requirement after his plea.

Voynov played on a team composed of Russian athletes at the Pyeongchang Olympics earlier this year. His attorney did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment Monday.

Deputy NHL Commissioner Bill Daly told The Associated Press by email that Voynov’s status has not changed but that he can now proceed with a petition for reinstatement.

The Kings said in a statement to The AP: ”Any decision to reinstate Slava Voynov into the league is in the hands of the NHL. It is premature to comment prior to the NHL’s ruling.”

Voynov’s agent didn’t immediately reply to a text message seeking comment late Monday.

AP Hockey Writer Stephen Whyno contributed to this report.

The Pittsburgh Steelers value versatility in their defensive backs. Morgan Burnett should fit right in.

The two-time defending AFC North champions signed the free agent safety to a three-year deal on Tuesday, part of an overhaul in the secondary that began last week when the team cut ties with veterans Mike Mitchell, Robert Golden and William Gay.

The 29-year-old Burnett has played all eight seasons of his NFL career in Green Bay Sebastian Janikowski Jersey , collecting 683 tackles, 44 passes defensed, nine interceptions and 10 fumble recoveries. He started 102 games for the Packers and won a Super Bowl ring in 2011, when Green Bay beat Pittsburgh.

"I'm coming in to do my job the best I can do Nick Easton Jersey , wherever I fit," Burnett said. "To be accountable as a teammate and earn the respect of the coaches and get into a routine with the rest of the fellas."

Burnett moved around late in his tenure with the Packers but spent the majority of the time in Green Bay at safety. It's a position where the Steelers have a serious need after deciding to part ways with Mitchell and Golden. Sean Davis has shown flashes during his two seasons and has one of the two starting spots. The other remains up in the air, though Burnett would figure to have the inside track over J.J. Wilcox.

"There's things in my toolbox I'm capable to move around and play different positions if need be," Burnett said. "But definitely I came into the league as safety and that's where I'm comfortable at."

Burnett's signing is the second by Pittsburgh during free agency. The Steelers signed inside linebacker Jon Bostic to a two-year deal over the weekend.

The NFL has determined the Buffalo Bills acted properly in the aftermath of team president Russ Brandon’s resignation amid allegations he had an inappropriate relationship with a female employee.

The league released a statement Friday saying it will take no further action against the Bills. The league determined the team ”addressed the matter in a timely Laken Tomlinson Jersey , thorough and appropriate manner.”

The statement comes a week after the NFL wouldn’t rule out launching an investigation in announcing it planned to contact the Bills to discuss the reasons behind Brandon’s abrupt departure.

Brandon resigned May 1 after spending 20 years working up the Bills’ executive ranks. He also spent the past three years serving as president of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, who also are owned by Terry and Kim Pegula.

Two people with direct knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that Brandon’s resignation came after he was confronted about the relationship by the Pegulas. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because it is an internal matter, and the Pegulas did not provide a reason when announcing they accepted Brandon’s resignation.

Brandon told the AP he had contemplated stepping down from the job for some time, and felt the timing was right following the conclusion of the NFL draft. He did not respond to follow-up questions regarding the alleged relationship.

The NHL last week consulted with the Sabres and determined Brandon’s resignation was a club matter.

Alex Smith doesn't believe in assigned seats.

As he tried to get to know his new Washington Redskins teammates, Smith sat in a different seat for each meeting.

Defensive line coach Jim Tomsula knew that from his time with Smith in San Francisco, and running back Chris Thompson beamed, "That's a trait from your quarterback that you like to see."

It's a concerted effort by Smith to fit in with the guys, something he did quickly after taking over as the Redskins' franchise quarterback.

Be it his personality, his depth of NFL experience or the long-term contract that previous starter Kirk Cousins never had in Washington, Smith has already assumed the place of unquestioned leader and made players sense an entirely different vibe around the team.

"(It's about) putting yourself out there, being real and nothing fake Justin Coleman Jersey , nothing phony but getting to know the guys, letting your guard down," Smith said. "I'm more conscious of it as I've gotten older about that, about the responsibility as a teammate, being a good teammate."

No one around the Redskins is calling Cousins a bad teammate, and team brass is reluctant to compare him and Smith on or off the field. But ever since Smith took the field in practice in burgundy and gold, he has been the subject of glowing praise about his ability to lead.

"He's always been a leader," left tackle Trent Williams said. "You could tell he's comfortable in that role. He's what we needed."

A series of one-year contracts made Cousins unwilling or unable to fully fill that void. After signing a guaranteed $84 million, three-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings, Cousins felt he finally had a "license to lead" that was never there with the Redskins, who took him in the same draft as Robert Griffin III Aaron Jones Jersey , made him compete for the starting job and never agreed to a long-term contract.

Washington not only acquired Smith from Kansas City but signed him to a $94 million, four-year extension with $71 million guaranteed and put the pressure on him to get back to the playoffs for the first time since the 2015 season. That's as much as license to lead as anything, but the 34-year-old brushed off the trappings of that kind of security.

"All you're guaranteed is a year at a time here and even game by game," Smith said. "I appreciate so much the opportunity I have today and right in front of me and I'm not really thinking past that. Contract, all this and that, I'm not feeling any kind of comfort in that. No. I've got a huge sense of urgency to go out there and to go right now, to go today. I'm not waiting on anything. So it doesn't change my approach at all."

It's that approach that quickly won Smith the respect of teammates, who spent the opening days of training camp talking about things feeling "different" this year.

This was a team with Jay Gruden entering his fifth season as head coach with almost the same core of players except at the most important position.

"We got a lot of leaders on this team, especially with your quarterback," safety D.J. Swearinger said. "When you get a guy like Alex Smith in here, a lot changes. ... He's changed the leadership of how the offense approaches (the game). When they break the huddle Ethan Pocic Jersey , it's a different bounce. It's a different way he comes on the line and commands the offense."

That's what senior vice president of player personnel and retired QB Doug Williams thought the Redskins were getting in Smith, who is coming off a season in which he set career highs with 4,042 yards passing and 26 touchdowns. Cousins threw for 4,000 yards the past three seasons, but Washington wanted a long-term answer and found it in Smith.

"What we've seen since he's been here is everything that we thought, that Jim (Tomsula) was talking about, from a leadership standpoint," Williams said.

"When he walked in the building, you could feel Alex Smith taking control of the locker room and being part of what we were looking for from a stability standpoint."

The practice field has been the setting for Redskins players getting an up-close look at Smith. Cornerback Josh Norman bemoaned not being able to get enough work in because Smith was too accurate and wouldn't make mistakes, and Swearinger called him the kind of player defenders hate to face.

Gruden, a former QB himself and an offensive guru Brett Favre Jersey , sees Smith as someone who can run his playbook and is also tailoring some things to him to maximize his mobility and decision-making prowess.

"Really what CAN'T he do?" Gruden said. "We're just trying to come up with a plan of attack that utilizes his skillset and make him as comfortable as possible."

Smith looks and feels comfortable off the field, too. In addition to players admiring how the playbook has grown because of his addition, Thompson and said Smith "seemed to just fit in with us right away."

Gruden said Smith "doesn't walk in here like he's king. He's walking in here like he's one of the guys." As one of the fittest players on the team, Smith sets a work ethic example, and his personality is such that Gruden thinks he could play a pickup basketball game with anyone and fit in.

Perhaps that's why his transition to Washington has been so seamless that Williams said it feels as if Smith has been around a long time. The Redskins hope he actually is.

"He has the charisma, he has the character, he has everything that you want in a quarterback," Williams said. "And that's what they're supposed to be: a face of the franchise, and I can tell you this: Alex Smith fits that mold as the face of a franchise."

John Elway is giving his clearest indication yet that he's going to pursue Kirk Cousins John Matuszak Jersey , the prize of this year's free-agent quarterbacks.

"We're going to explore all options in free agency and see where that goes," Elway said Wednesday at the NFL combine. "Obviously we've got the fifth pick in the draft, too. That will all play into it. We'll continue to look at all of the options out there when it comes to quarterback."

The Denver Broncos general manager stressed that he'll look at "anybody that won't be under contract."

With the Washington Redskins moving on to Alex Smith, whom they've agreed to acquire from Kansas City, that group of free agents would include Cousins, who figures to command more than the record $27.5 million that Jimmy Garoppolo will receive in his new deal with the San Francisco 49ers.

Elway said he's confident the team could absorb a big free-agent contract under the salary cap, revealed the Broncos are considering moving Ronald Leary back to left guard and indicated highly paid receivers Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders aren't going anywhere.

"Yes, the plan is to have them back," Elway said.

That means, Elway will pick up Thomas' $4 million bonus in March, which will keep the last two years of the wide receiver's contract in place.

"That is the plan Will Dissly Jersey , yes."

The returns of tight end Jake Butt and slot receiver Carlos Henderson, who spent their rookie years on IR last season, could help bolster the Broncos' offense, as well.

Elway has been stung by the draft selections of Brock Osweiler and Paxton Lynch, but he hit the jackpot six years ago when he landed Peyton Manning.

The Broncos have missed the playoffs each of the two seasons after Manning retired, including a 5-11 season last year when they cycled through quarterbacks Trevor Siemian, Osweiler and Lynch twice .

Elway said he's eager to see the promising class of college quarterbacks this week that features Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen, Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Lamar Jackson and Mason Rudolph.

"There is a possibility of some really good quarterbacks coming out of this draft C.J. Mosley Jersey ," Elway said.

Elway got burned two years ago when he moved up to take Lynch with the 26th overall pick only to watch him founder on the sideline most of the past two seasons.

"Believe me, I'm not done swinging and missing," Elway said with a laugh. "Misses don't bother me. We just have to figure out a way to get it right. That is what we are working on."

Even with so much uncertainty at quarterback, Elway has been in a good mood this week.

"If there's any year I wanted to play it was last year, to come back and play as a player and try to get things turned around," Elway said. "Sitting in my chair was a long, long year."

Elway is also a member of the league's competition committee which has been discussing simplifying the catch rule that's become so cumbersome in recent seasons and which commissioner Roger Goodell has put atop his offseason fix-it list.

Elway said the competition committee is making progress in that regard.

"I think it'll be much simpler and I think everyone will understand what a catch is and what it isn't," Elway said. "I think that we're in the process of everything that we covered so far, it's going to be much better."

So, "survive the ground" will soon be out of the NFL's lexicon.

"Yeah, going to the ground Coby Fleener Jersey , that'll be changed," Elway said.

Goodell wanted the league to go back and start from scratch after tweaks to the rule only made it more troublesome.

"Or let's go back to what the old definition of what a catch was, right? Two feet down, control and move and then you've got a catch," Elway said. "That's what it's going to be more like."

The Bengals agreed to a one-year deal with often-injured tight end Tyler Eifert and a three-year deal with punter Kevin Huber on Thursday, holding onto two of their unrestricted free agents.

Eifert has been hurt during much of his five-year career in Cincinnati. He was sidelined for half of the 2016 season because of an ankle injury and a problem with a disc in his back that required surgery. He aggravated his back early last season and went on an injury list after two games.

”Couldn’t be happier to stay home in Cincinnati,” Eifert tweeted . ”The last five years have been tough at times but every day I have been proud to be on the (at)Bengals.”

The Bengals took Eifert with the 21st overall choice in the 2013 draft, hoping his pass receiving skills would upgrade their offense. He’s been one of Andy Dalton’s favorite targets, especially near the goal line, but has been severely limited by injuries in three of his five seasons.

The Bengals finished last in the NFL in offense last season for the first time in their history.

Eifert caught 39 passes for 445 yards and two touchdowns in 15 games as a rookie. The following year, he hurt his shoulder during training camp and dislocated an elbow in the opener Phil Simms Jersey , ending his season. He returned and had his best season in 2015, caching 52 passes for 615 yards and 13 touchdowns, a franchise record for a tight end.

He made the Pro Bowl that season and tore a ligament in his ankle during the game, requiring surgery. He returned and played in eight games in 2016, making 29 catches for 394 yards and five touchdowns, but an injured back disc ended the season and resulted in more surgery.

Huber has spent all 10 seasons with Cincinnati. He had 32 punts inside the 20-yard line last season, fourth in the NFL.

Tre McBride realizes that few New York Jets fans knew his name as recently as just a few weeks ago. And the speedy wide receiver is OK with that.

He considers himself an underdog Austin Hooper Jersey , a guy who has been mostly overlooked during a brief NFL career that has included stops with Tennessee and Chicago.

"I feel like any competitor would feel that way about themselves if they were kind of going through the things a roster bubble guy like myself goes through," McBride said after a recent practice. "I'm not the only one who does and I'm not the only one who'll ever go through this, so I don't feel sorry for myself or anything."

No need. Those days of anonymity might be over.

McBride has had an impressive training camp with the Jets, running with the starting offense at times while making a strong push to make the team's opening-day roster.

"Yeah, I feel like I have a little chip on my shoulder and maybe I feel like I'm underrated," McBride said. "But that's fine. That's why I'm out here with this opportunity, to show people that I can play ball at the highest level."

The 25-year-old McBride is part of a receiving corps that includes Robby Anderson, Jermaine Kearse, Quincy Enunwa and Terrelle Pryor. Beyond those four, it's unclear how many receivers will be kept among the remaining seven.

ArDarius Stewart, Chad Hansen and Charone Peake are recent draft picks, while Andre Roberts is a veteran who provides versatility on special teams as a returner. There's also Charles Johnson and Lucky Whitehead, once-promising youngsters who are coming off injuries.

And then, there's McBride, who was signed to the Jets' practice squad last December after being waived by the Bears.

"They are all pretty solid," coach Todd Bowles said. "That's going to be a tough group when final cuts come down because all of them can play and all of them will probably play somewhere in this league. If we do let some go Thomas Morstead Jersey , they'll probably get picked up."

McBride has four catches for 40 yards in the first two preseason games, and has really impressed coaches throughout the offseason and training camp.

"I'd say overall, I think I've taken advantage of the opportunities I've been given," McBride said. "I think most important is that, for the most part, it's been really consistent."

McBride knows he has two more preseason games to further impress, including Friday night against the Giants.

Bowles said he expects his starters to play a minimum of two quarters in the game. With Enunwa and Pryor uncertain to play as they continue to work back from injuries, McBride could have a significant role.

"Anything can happen," he said. "I've been surprised before. I would like to believe that they've put me out with the 1s (starters) for a reason, not just because. That's really what I have to go off of, that they trust me enough to be in there with the No. 1 quarterback and the No. 1 guys out there and that's what I'm here to do, make some plays with the top guys."

McBride 鈥?whose given name is Douglas III 鈥?grew up in a military family that was often on the move. His father, Doug Jr., is a brigadier general in the U.S. Army and was stationed in places such as Hawaii, Virginia, North Carolina Patrick Omameh Jersey , Rhode Island, Texas and Maryland.

Once the family got to Georgia, Tre's mother Pamela and sister Taylor settled there with him 鈥?even after Doug Jr. was sent to his next post 鈥?so they could establish some roots.

"Adapting to new environments and the way things are in the area I'm in is something that, at this point, comes natural to me," McBride said.

He was a three-sport star at Ola High School in McDonough, Georgia, while playing on the football team as well as the basketball and track and field squads. From there he went on to play football at the College of William and Mary and was a starter by his sophomore season. He finished second in school history with 196 career receptions and was fifth with 2,653 yards receiving.

McBride's stock for the 2015 draft rose after he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.41 seconds at the NFL combine, with some expecting him to be taken as high as the third round. Six rounds came and went, though, before Tennessee took him in the seventh as the 245th player chosen.

McBride spent most of his first two NFL seasons bouncing back and forth between the Titans' practice squad, the active roster and waivers. After two catches in two years, McBride was among Tennessee's final cuts last September. He was claimed by Chicago and signed to the Bears' practice squad before being promoted and having eight catches for 144 yards in eight games 鈥?but was then waived and signed by the Jets.

"I've had great camps every year I've been in the league," he said. "When I get on the field and I get an opportunity, I can play ball. Maybe the numbers don't work out Brandon Fusco Jersey , maybe I'm not their guy, whoever it is, but it's never because I didn't show that I could play."

McBride might stick around this time 鈥?and his name is certainly catching on with Jets fans.

"I'm past everything that's happened in the past, except for what's going on right now," McBride said. "I'm kind of focusing on this opportunity and making the most of it."

Panthers defensive end Mario Addison has spent his entire life shedding labels.

Now the former undrafted rookie from Troy who was waived by three other NFL teams appears on the verge of joining the upper echelon of the league's defensive ends entering his eighth season.

The 30-year-old Addison has slowly but steadily worked his way up through the NFL ranks, going from being a special teams player early in his career to a third-down pass rush specialist and finally to an every down defensive end last season. Despite being undersized at 254 pounds, Addison started all 16 games for the Panthers in 2017, registering 11 sacks and 44 tackles.

"He's been a guy that everybody had tried to knock for his whole career," Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly said. "Everyone has tried to put him in a box and he keeps bursting out of the box that people try to put him in. And yet nobody talks enough about what he has done."

All Addison has done is record 20 陆 sacks over the last two seasons and taken a firm grasp on the team's starting right defensive end spot. Not bad for a kid who was so lightly recruited in high school he wound up playing at Northeast Community College in Booneville, Mississippi before earning a scholarship offer from Troy.

Addison's NFL career didn't begin to blossom until he joined the Panthers late in the 2012 season.

He played mostly on special teams at first, but developed into a situational pass rusher and combined for 12 陆 sacks in 2013 and 2014. The following year he tallied 9 陆 sacks, earning him a three-year, $22.5 million contract from Carolina.

"I knew I had it me," Addison said. "I just had to show the coaches that I was able to play every down. Every year I grew and showed them that I am worthy of playing every down. It has worked out for me."

The knock on Addison was that he wasn't big enough.

He regularly gives up 50-plus pounds and several inches to some of the league's gigantic left tackles.

But teammates and coaches say Addison has unusual strength and desire to get better that has taken him to another level.

"I think he's tough, he's physical and he's strong," Kuechly said. "His speed and his strength are a very rare combination. I mean Jerome Baker Jersey , he has 20 陆 sacks the last two seasons. If you were to say that about another guy in the league, you would be ranking him way higher, right?"

Eric Washington, the Panthers defensive line coach prior to being promoted to coordinator earlier this offseason, has been a huge influence on Addison.

Addison said Washington gave him the "tools" he needed to add to his skillset and showed him how to use them. Addison took it from there, working day after day to perfect his craft not only as a rusher but as a run defender.

Washington talks of Addison like a proud parent, calling him one of the toughest players he's ever coached 鈥?both physically and mentally 鈥?and saying the motivation of being cut by three other teams has helped drive him to succeed.

"Every single year he has accepted the challenge of improving and growing," Washington said. "He's always wanted to be a starter and a difference maker."

Addison said his personal goal this season is to top 11 sacks.

Teammates like Kuechly say that is entirely possible, knowing his motivation.

"Everything I got now, I worked for," Addison said. "And I value it. Nothing was given to me in this league. Truly everything I got, I earned. Every morning I wake up and I'm driven 鈥?I am driven to get better."

Ken Holland once transitioned the Detroit Red Wings from Steve Yzerman Cory James Jersey , Sergei Fedorov and that generation of greats to the one that followed with Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. Now he’s trying to do it again.

The veteran general manager knows it won’t be as easy this time, so he’s adding and keeping some older players to bridge the gap. On Sunday , the Red Wings signed 34-year-old winger Thomas Vanek and 29-year-old goaltender Jonathan Bernier and re-signed 32-year-old defenseman Mike Green.

Vanek signed a $3 million, one-year deal, Bernier got $3 million per season on a three-year deal and Green will make $5.375 million annually over the next two years as part of a series of transitional deals for the rebuilding Red Wings.

”It’s going to take a little bit of time, we have to have some patience,” Holland said. ”I believe we’re headed in the right direction. In the short term, trying to bring in some veteran players obviously to mentor, to role-model the young kids. We need to be competitive. It’s important to develop players if they’re in an environment that’s positive and we go into every game we have a chance to win and we’re trying to obviously juggle having veterans on the roster and moving young players into the roster.”

Vanek enjoyed his 48 games with the Red Wings in 2016-17 so much he wanted to return last summer, but they didn’t have the salary-cap space. He’s not the prolific scorer he was a decade ago, but Vanek was in demand after putting up 15 points in 19 regular-season games with the Blue Jackets as a trade-deadline pickup.

”We had a few options, but Detroit, ever since I’ve been there, I loved it,” Vanek said. ”I really liked the whole culture of the organization and the guys were great.”

As a right-shot defender who can run a power play, Green would’ve drawn serious interest if he became an unrestricted free agent. He never seriously considered leaving.

With the neck injury that cut his season short has healed Terron Armstead Jersey , he wanted to remain with the Red Wings and help bring along the next generation.

”There’s a lot that weighed on my decision to stay,” Green said. ”I think it’s easy sometimes just to go somewhere else, especially with the transition that’s going on there in Detroit, but I feel like I can be useful in the next couple years kind of helping the younger guys develop quicker and speed up that process.”

Having better goaltending might not speed up the process, but it’ll make the Red Wings more competitive. They think they’ll get that from Bernier, who was the odd man out in Colorado and will split duties in net with Jimmy Howard.

”We’re going to push each other to bring this team back to the playoffs,” Bernier said. ”I didn’t want to be in a position where I played 15, 20 games. I want to come in and have a chance to play as much as possible obviously depending on play. I just thought it was a great opportunity that me and Jimmy can battle for our games.”

Holland isn’t worried about clogging the roster up for young players. Sixth overall pick Filip Zadina should be able to play right away up front, and the Red Wings have begun to rebuild their prospect pipeline.

One immediate problem could be the health of captain Henrik Zetterberg, who has been hampered by back problems and is no sure bet to be able to play next season. Zetterberg, who turns 38 in October, cast doubts on his future after the season, and Holland can’t say with any certainty what will happen with the Swedish center.

”Last I talked to him, I think he’s planning on playing,” Holland said. ”Obviously his back is going to determine whether he can or he can’t. … When you’re dealing with the back and you’re dealing with the health of a person, it’s hard to read the future when it comes to health. Obviously that’s a key piece for us. I’ll stay in touch with Henrik as we get into July to see how his health is.”

They’ve survived amid turmoil for months Mike Alstott Jersey , their season morphing into the NBA’s most compelling reality show – or, as some have called it, spectacle.

The must-watch Cleveland Cavaliers have been hardened by the nonstop drama around them. So it’s not a surprise they’re calm despite trailing the Boston Celtics 2-0 in the Eastern Conference finals.

”We know what it takes,” coach Tyronn Lue said. ”We’re down 0-2. No need to panic.”

”We know what we’ve got to do,” added All-Star forward Kevin Love on the eve of Saturday’s Game 3.

The Cavs have been in dire straits before in the postseason.

Just two years ago, Cleveland trailed 2-0 and then 3-1 in the NBA Finals to Golden State before coming back to win in seven games and end the city’s 52-year championship drought. And back in the 2007 playoffs, LeBron James rallied the Cavs from a 2-0 deficit against Detroit, the hardwood king commencing his legacy by scoring Cleveland’s final 25 points during a Game 5 road win.

But while Cleveland has some comeback history on its side, Boston has momentum and the Celtics intend to keep it.

”We’re just gonna try to use it,” said forward Marcus Morris, ”and ride it.”

As expected, James responded from a sub-par performance in Game 1 by scoring 42 points with 12 assists and 10 rebounds in Game 2. Still, the Cavs lost and the lack of production from several teammates, most notably guards J.R. Smith and George Hill. They have been totally outplayed by Jaylen Brown and Terry Rozier so far, and that could be deflating.

Not to the Celtics, who gained confidence in shrugging off James’ haymaker.

”That’s a game-changer in itself Jeremy Kerley Jersey ,” said Morris, one of the many defenders Celtics coach Brad Stevens is using on James. ”LeBron came out and did everything he could. To his guys, they see that and they still came up short. That’s a feeling going back up, it kind of puts you in a mood you don’t want to be in.”

Speaking of moods. James, who hasn’t spoken to the media since Tuesday’s game, screamed an obscenity in frustration while working on his jump shot following practice. He made 12 straight before a miss, but James, who is seeking his eighth straight Finals, knows he’s going to need to be near perfect from here on out.

James, Love, Smith and Tristan Thompson are the only holdovers from Cleveland’s 2016 title team, which mounted its historic comeback in the Finals and now must rally again.

”I was talking to some of the guys in the training room and I was telling people it was already the Eastern Conference finals,” Smith said. ”Being in this situation repetitively for the past couple years, I don’t want to say you get numb to it because you don’t want to take it for granted because obviously guys don’t have this opportunity too many times, but this season alone has been an extremely weird year and we just got to figure it out.”

To the outside world, Cleveland appears in trouble. They’re facing a younger Will Dissly Jersey , more physical team that has been written off several times already.

To the Cavs, this is just another bump in the road. They’ve already staved off elimination against Indiana.

”We played a Game 7,” Lue said. ”The danger’s not like we come out and don’t play well tomorrow and lose, it’s over. We still have games to play. It’s not like it’s a Game 7. They did a good job taking care of their home court. They played well. Now we’re back at home.”

ROAD WORK AHEAD: The Celtics haven’t traveled well in these playoffs.

They’re just 1-4 outside Boston and their shooting percentages have dipped on trips to Milwaukee and Philadelphia. But after losing three road games to the Bucks in the first round, the young Celtics showed poise in stealing a Game 3 win in Philadelphia that has convinced them they can win in Cleveland.

”We’re pretty confident,” Brown said. ”Just as confident as we are at home. It’s different between being on the road and at home, just the energy disparity. At home, it’s for you, away it’s against you. But if you do what you’re supposed to do and you are who you are, it’ll show home or away.”

NEED FOR SPEED: The Cavs know they need to play faster. On too many occasions in Games 1 and 2, Cleveland was slow bringing the ball up the floor, which allowed the Celtics to get back and set up their defense.

Lue has been harping on his players to quicken the pace.

”We have to come out with a sense of urgency to attack early, don’t ease into the game or let this team off the hook,” Lue said after practice Friday. ”We know they play well at home and they had two good games, so now it’s our turn.”

America’s space agency wants you to head for the mountains with a smartphone and a measuring stick.

NASA’s earth science arm is funding research that recruits citizen scientists on skis Bart Starr Jersey , snowshoes and snowmobiles to measure snow depth in backcountry locations of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.

Their measurements will be incorporated into computer models that calculate how much water will end up in the region’s rivers and reservoirs.

      Early results have been promising.

”Our initial model runs show that citizen science measurements are doing an amazing job of improving our simulations,” said David Hill, an Oregon State University professor of civil engineering, who is collaborating with Alaska and University of Washington researchers. They received one of 16 NASA citizen science grants for the project.

The snowpack measurements are incorporated into computer models estimating ”snow-water equivalent,” the amount of liquid water contained in snow cover, of a watershed.

In western states, according to NASA, nearly three-fourths of annual stream flow that provides drinking water comes from spring and summer melt.

NASA in February began a multiyear research project to improve the accuracy of its snow measurements with partners in Europe and Canada, trying to solve challenges such as detecting snow through trees.

The grant awarded to Hill, Anthony Arendt of the University of Washington and Gabriel Wolken, a research geologist with the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys Wayne Gallman Jersey , is not directly connected to that project but has a mutual interest, said Kevin Murphy, a program executive for science data systems at NASA headquarters.

”We decided about two years ago to start this program, which really looks at how can we harness the creativity and the capabilities of citizens to augment a lot of our satellite or aircraft measurements,” Murphy said.

Snow telemetry stations maintained by the U.S. Agriculture Department are another important tool for measuring snow in high-elevation and other hard-to-access places, Hill said. The unmanned stations collect data using a system of automated sensors.

But too few of them exist, Hill said. ”They’re expensive to install, they’re expensive to maintain, so there just aren’t that many.”

The citizen snow-measuring program, Community Snow Observations , aims to supplement that with people.

”We want to turn the public into these mobile snow telemetry stations Joe Montana Jersey ,” he said. ”You just need a probe to do it.”

The measuring device can be as rudimentary as a yardstick, Hill said, but most people venturing into mountains already carry an avalanche probe, a 5- to 6-meter stick that folds down like a tent pole. After an avalanche, the probes are used to feel for buried people. Probes typically carry measurement markings.

”You want to know when you actually find that person how deep they are,” Hill said. ”They’re really just a big, long ruler.”

For the citizen science program, an online tutorial tells participants to find undisturbed snow, push the probe firmly to the ground, read the depth in centimeters and enter the data onto a smartphone app. Participants are asked to repeat that several times and average the measurements.

The app records the location and time of the measurement and uploads the information. The program accounts for measurements in continental climate locations with light, dry snow or the wet Clay Matthews Jersey , dense snow of maritime climates.

Initial measurements were made last winter in Alaska’s Thompson Pass north of Valdez, where other snow research was being conducted.

”I recruited some of the folks from Valdez Avalanche Center. They brought friends along,” said Wolken, the Alaska research geologist. ”That was our first go at getting sort of a grassroots, citizen science team.”

The hundreds of measurements collected far outpaced what the scientists could gather themselves. When NASA announced grants for citizen scientist projects, the researchers jumped to apply, Wolken said.

Preliminary calculations have been ”striking,” Hill said, and the subject of a paper written by a doctoral student.

”He has results that basically show that the errors in our modeled snow-water equivalent are cut by about 90 percent with this input from public,” Hill said. ”We’re thrilled about that.”

Other NASA grants in the program will use citizen scientists to collect data on mosquito populations and their breeding environments around the world, water depths in lakes in North Carolina and elsewhere Russell Wilson Jersey , moisture in soil at various locations, changes in giant kelp across the globe, and images of clouds from the ground in Colorado.

The Jets held an intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday night and quarterback Sam Darnold worked mainly with the third team while completing 9-of-11 passes for 89 yards.

After it was over, Jets head coach Todd Bowles said, via comments distributed by the team, that he could see some errors by the rookie but that he’s “getting better every day and we will go from there.” Will he go from the third team to the first team?

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Darnold has a “very fair shot” at nailing down the starting job before the start of the regular season as he is “further along than they thought” he’d be at this point. Bowles has installed Josh McCown as the team’s No. 1 with Teddy Bridgewater running as the No. 2 in training camp.

Thursday brings a preseason game against the Falcons and a chance for Darnold to face an NFL defense that’s going to try to hit him for the first time and that should start to provide a better idea of how quickly he’ll ascend the depth chart this month.

The Pittsburgh Pirates might want to scratch out a scouting report on Brent Suter — as a hitter — before their series finale Wednesday night against the Milwaukee Brewers at PNC Park.

Suter is strong enough on the mound. The left-hander is 7-4 with a 4.30 ERA going into his expected start against the Pirates Taron Johnson Jersey , and over his past six starts he is 5-1 with a 3.24 ERA.

That includes a 13-2 win over Philadelphia Friday, when Suter allowed one run and six hits while tying a career high with seven innings pitched. But he seemed more excited about what he did at the plate in that game.

Suter drove in a run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, reached on an error and singled in a run in his three plate appearances against the Phillies.

“I feel locked in at the plate,” he said. “I’m a little late on fastballs, but I’m seeing the ball well. I’m seeing offspeed down. Any way you can help your team win is a good way to help your team win.”

Suter is 3-for-10 since he hit a 433-foot homer off American League Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber May 9. He was 4-for-28 before that, including 1-for-8 this season.

“There’s a confidence there,” Suter said. “Hitting is one of my favorite parts. I love hitting. I’ve loved it my whole life. Even when I’m struggling, I still like going up there and trying to whack it.”

As for his “day job Phil Simms Jersey ,” Suter will be trying to help the Brewers (43-30) take the series and keep hold of first place in the National League Central.

Milwaukee won 3-2 Tuesday to end a three-game losing streak.

Pittsburgh (36-37) had won four of five before Tuesday and will be trying to win its second straight series after losing eight in a row.

Suter will oppose Pittsburgh right-hander Chad Kuhl (5-4, 3.76 ERA).

In his past five starts, Kuhl has allowed eight earned runs in 30 1/3 innings. Over his past eight starts, he has a 2.89 ERA.

Part of his recent success is tied to mixing in a lot of breaking balls.

“It’s a heater-hunting league, especially when you throw a hard heater. Guys are trying to hit the heater, it’s no secret,” Kuhl said. “Throwing that 1/8slider 3/8 a ton. Feel really comfortable with it. It’s gotten me out of some really big jams, gotten me some strikeouts and some early action. It kind of does both for me. Just being able to throw that in any count has been huge.”

Against Milwaukee Xavier Rhodes Jersey , Kuhl is 3-0 with a 1.91 ERA, and the Pirates are 6-0 in his starts. This season, he gave up one hit and tied a career high with eight strikeouts over seven scoreless innings May 6 in a 9-0 win.

“When you know you’ve had success and remember some pitches that may have worked for you, you’re able to use that to your advantage, but every game is different,” Kuhl said.

Suter is 1-0 with 1.80 ERA in eight games — three starts — against the Pirates.

Eric Wood can finally announce he's retiring after the Buffalo Bills released the veteran center in a move considered a formality after he was diagnosed with a career-ending neck injury in January.

The NFL transactions list on Thursday listed the Bills reaching an injury settlement and releasing Wood under the designation: "Termination of vested veteran."

The decision by the Bills ends a lengthy waiting period for the team and Wood.

By waiting until Thursday, the Bills limited the effect the player's remaining bonus money will have on their salary cap. The more than $10 million in bonus money owed to Wood will now only count against the team's salary cap this year rather than be spread over the two years left on the contract.

Wood declined to comment on being released by the Bills in a text to The AP. Wood did say he's planning to attend Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly's annual charitable auction and golf tournament in Buffalo this weekend.

Though Wood said he'll never play again, the nine-year veteran balked at the last minute to announce his retirement during a news conference in January.

Wood read from a prepared statement and spoke for less than two minutes in revealing end of season tests discovered two discs being dangerously close to his spinal cord.

"Thanks to everyone who supported me throughout my career. And because of that Obi Melifonwu Jersey , I am here today," Wood said. "I'm sure there are a lot of unanswered questions. I hope to address those at a later date. Thanks, and go Bills."

According to the NFL's collective bargaining agreement, teams could have asked for a portion of bonus money to be returned if a player retired before his contract expired. There was, however, a gray area if a player retired as a result of a career-ending injury.

Wood is from Cincinnati and spent four seasons playing at Louisville before being selected by the Bills with their second of two first-round picks in the 2009 draft. Wood earned a starting job entering his rookie season and appeared in 121 games, including one in the playoffs.

He was a respected team leader, popular in the community for his charitable work Davonte Lambert Jersey , and was the team's Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee in 2015 and '16.

Aside from Wood, Buffalo's offensive line must also replace starting left guard Richie Incognito, who abruptly retired in April and was then released by the Bills earlier this month.

锟斤拷锟?The founding document of Alcoholics Anonymous Dalvin Cook Jersey , known to adherents as the “Big Book,” sold at auction Saturday for $2.4 million to billionaire and Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay.

The auction house Profiles in History announced the sale of the manuscript with handwritten notes from the group’s founding fathers.

Irsay told The Associated Press he plans to build a special display for the manuscript and display it for several months a year at Alcoholics Anonymous’ headquarters in New York. He says he attempted to buy the manuscript when it was up for auction several years ago, and he is thrilled at the opportunity to share it publicly.

Irsay said he considers himself a steward for the manuscript, which he said he may also send out on tour so it can be seen by more people.

“I’ve held it. I’ve looked through it. It is absolutely mind-blowing,” he said. “It was just a miracle to see this thing live.”

Irsay, who was clearly excited about obtaining the manuscript during a telephone interview John Kuhn Jersey , said he considered remaining anonymous about purchasing the manuscript, but wanted to go public to try to relieve the stigma of alcoholism and addiction.

“The only way we stay sober is to give it away,” Irsay said.

“I think it’ll help a lot of people,” he said. “That’s the reason I’m doing it.”

He said he attended his first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting 25 years ago, and marvels at the reach of the organization and what its founders built.

It is the third time the 161-page typed document has been sold. It sold in 2007 for $850,000 and for $1.6 million in 2004. Saturday’s auction was delayed by a dispute with Alcoholics Anonymous World Services Jason Taylor Jersey , Inc.

The manuscript includes notes and scribbles from one of AA’s founders, William Wilson, more commonly known as “Bill W.”

Wilson’s widow Lois owned the papers after his death in 1971, and she passed them on to her friend Barry Leach. Alcoholics Anonymous said Leach signed and notarized a letter in 1979 saying the manuscript would belong to the organization after his death. He died in 1985, but the manuscript did not make its way to Alcoholics Anonymous, which did not know about the notarized letter at the time.

Its ownership history in the ensuing years is not entirely clear until 2004 Duke Dawson Jersey , when Sotheby’s auctioned it for $1.6 million. Then it sold to Roberts in 2007.

A website devoted to the auction describes the manuscript as a “Bible to millions” that has sold 30 million copies since 1939, been translated into 43 languages and has been ranked by the Library of Congress as a top non-fiction book that shaped America.

“We are thrilled this most historic manuscript has sold and hope it will be exhibited for the world to see the manuscript that has saved the lives of millions of people,” Profiles in History founder Joe Maddalena said.

Patriots wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell was the subject of a pair of reports this week, but Patriots coach Bill Belichick wasn’t interested in discussing either one of them during a press conference on Wednesday.

The first report had the Patriots looking for potential trade partners for a deal involving Mitchell, who did not play last season due to a knee injury. Mitchell continued to deal with knee trouble during the offseason program and the second report this week indicated that he had a procedure that would keep him off the field for the start of training camp.

Belichick was asked about Mitchell at Wednesday’s press conference and said that he would not “engage in media speculation” while adding that he hasn’t spoken to anyone regarding the team’s plans for Mitchell. As for Mitchell’s health, Belichick said that the team has players at different degrees of availability as training camp gets underway.

Mitchell showed promise as a rookie Jordan Phillips Jersey , but has had knee troubles dating back to college and his long absence from the field doesn’t do much to help his chances of building on it in New England.

Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly has been released from a New York City hospital a day after having surgery to prepare for permanent dentures to be inserted into his reconstructed upper jaw.

Mount Sinai West head and neck surgeon Mark Urken said the procedure went well Vinny Curry Jersey , in a statement released by the hospital on Friday.

Kelly’s wife, Jill, says her husband is experiencing some swelling and adds: ”Everything is moving forward as planned.”

The procedure involved doctors adding tissue into the upper portion of his mouth. Kelly is scheduled to have permanent dentures inserted during a follow-up procedure in September.

Kelly has been unable to eat solid foods since March, when he had surgery to have cancer removed from his jaw after tests revealed a recurrence. The 58-year-old Kelly was initially diagnosed five years ago with oral cancer, and had been cancer free since September 2014.

Andrew Heaney feels awfully comfortable on the mound in Anaheim – and the results reflect that.

Heaney pitched seven solid innings in another quality start, leading the Los Angeles Angels to a 2-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night.

In his last six starts at Angel Stadium, Heaney is 4-1 with a 0.88 ERA. Since April 27, his home ERA is second-best in the majors to Jon Lester (0.56 ERA).

”I like pitching here,” Heaney said. ”It’s a familiar place. Pitched the majority of my career here. It’s a good place to pitch when you have our defense and the way the field plays, especially when you get later in the game Earl Mitchell Jersey , later at night, it’s a good place to pitch.”

Heaney (4-5) allowed just one run and nine hits, and struck out four with no walks. The left-hander has gone at least seven innings in three of his last four starts.

The Angels got on the scoreboard with a two-run first inning, giving Heaney all the support he would need. Justin Upton drew a two-out walk and Albert Pujols doubled him in. Luis Valbuena singled in Pujols from second to give the Angels a 2-0 lead.

The Blue Jays had things going in the seventh when Devon Travis hit a run-scoring double to right field to pull Toronto within a run at 2-1. But with runners on first and second, Heaney struck out Justin Smoak and got Yangervis Solarte to fly out to left field. Heaney punctuated Upton’s catch in left field with a fist pump – and his night was done.

Upton also made a fantastic, leaping catch against the left-field fence to rob Russell Martin of a potential home run in the second inning, which proved to be critical in a tight game.

”I try to catch every ball,” Upton said. ”I just got a good jump on that. I got a pretty good read on where it was going to be so I ran to that spot, found out where the fence was and went up to catch it.”

It was early in the game, but it would be a big factor in the final result.

”We threw some hits up there Ty Montgomery Jersey , we just couldn’t get that big one,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. ”That was a big play with Upton catching Russ’ ball early in the game. You don’t realize at that time (it’s big). Marco (Estrada) did a great job. Heaney did a great job. It was one of those ballgames where a big hit could’ve made a difference.”

Estrada (4-7) had a fine start, too. He allowed just two earned runs and three hits in seven innings and struck out seven. He got Mike Trout out all three times he faced him, including two on called strikeouts.

”To be honest with you, that first inning I had the sun right in my face, I don’t know what it was,” Estrada said. ”There was a little opening at the top part of the stadium. I had no idea where the ball was going. It was really hard to see. Once that went away, I started making better pitches. Just elevated a lot. A lot of fastballs today up in the zone. That’s a really good lineup over there. I’ve struggled against them. Good to give the guys some innings and keep them in the game, but just came up short.”

Cam Bedrosian threw a perfect eighth in relief, and Blake Parker pitched a perfect ninth to earn his ninth save.

”It’s been good to win and good to hold some leads and get a little momentum after a couple Desmond King Jersey , I wouldn’t say bad outings, but a couple outings where I gave up some runs,” Parker said. ”I just wanted to stay aggressive and continue to throw quality strikes. It was a big win. The bullpen, in particular, would like to keep coming in and shutting it down and carry that on into the road trip.”

Asked about Upton’s leaping catch, Heaney said: ”It’s just what they do. It’s not abnormal. They do that all the time. You get numb to stuff that Simba (Andrelton Simmons) does over there. Valbuena has been playing great. We’ve got tons of guys who can make plays like that, so it’s great to have them behind me.”

      RARE STRIKEOUT

Simmons struck out in the fourth inning, a rarity for the Angels shortstop. It was his first strikeout since May 18, a span of 90 plate appearances. It was the fourth-longest streak in club history.

Blue Jays: RHP Danny Barnes (knee tendinitis) was placed on the 10-day disabled list. … OF Steve Pearce (left oblique strain) was activated from the 10-day disabled list. … INF Josh Donaldson (calf tightness) is rehabbing in Florida and not scheduled to return on the team’s road trip, but possibly the Blue Jays’ next homestand.

Angels: RHP Shohei Ohtani (elbow) stood in the batter’s box in the bullpen and watched pitches to work on his timing while he’s on the disabled list. He’s also running to stay in shape. He’s scheduled to have his elbow re-evaluated Thursday. … LHP Tyler Skaggs Jordan Phillips Jersey , who was scratched on the day of his scheduled start on Thursday with tightness in a hamstring, threw long toss and will throw a bullpen session on Saturday.

If someone proposed it today Brian Poole Jersey , they’d get laughed out of the room. But there was a time when one of the major events of the American sports year was a game between the reigning NFL champions and a team of college all-stars. And it all came to an end 42 years ago today.

Known as the Chicago Charities College All-Star Game, the contest was played every year from 1934 until 1976, with the exception of 1974, when it was canceled by an NFL players’ strike. Soldier Field hosted every game except the 1943 and 1944 games, which were played at Northwestern’s Dyche Stadium.

Could a ragtag group of 22-year-olds who had barely had time to practice together really compete with the best team in the NFL? Amazingly, in those days, they could. In the 1930s and 1940s, the best college players didn’t always choose to play pro football, and pro players weren’t necessarily better than college players. The first five College All-Star Games featured two wins by the college players, two ties, and only one win by the NFL team. (That one, in 1935, was the only year when the NFL’s runner-up, rather than the reigning champion, represented pro football.)

By the 1960s and 1970s, however Ronnie Stanley Jersey , pro football had become America’s most popular sport, and the money that came with playing pro ball meant all the best college players wanted to turn pro, and many of the top pro players were training year round, rather than finding offseason jobs. As a result, in the last couple decades of the College All-Star Game, the pro teams were beating the college teams consistently, and often easily: The pro teams won 16 of the last 17 College All-Star Games, and few of those games were even close.

The last game the College All-Stars won came in 1963, when the Green Bay Packers fell to the College All-Stars 20-17. Packers coach Vince Lombardi felt humiliated.

“We used to have a social get-together after a night game,” former Packer Boyd Dowler recalled in 2013. “Lombardi came in, and he looked visibly upset — like death warmed over. He wasn’t real kind when we got together for training camp again.”

Packers great Willie Davis added that Lombardi “would always bring it up to us when we weren’t playing well. Believe me, we never would forget it.”

On July 23, 1976, the Super Bowl champion Steelers played what would become the last College All-Star Game. A horrific thunderstorm broke out in the third quarter, and video of the game has to be seen to be believed: Not only was the storm like something out of a disaster movie, but when the college team’s coach George Blanda Jersey , Ara Parseghian called a timeout to try to get his players organized in the monsoon, the fans took the opportunity to storm the field. Eventually the game was called off in the third quarter, both because of lightning and because those fans on the field had torn down the goal posts and showed no signs of being willing to vacate. The Steelers led 24-0 at the time the game was called.

And that was the end of the College All-Star Game, for that year and forever. The game had come to seem pointless, as the college players really couldn’t compete with the NFL players anymore, fans were losing interest, and players were more concerned about avoiding injuries than winning the game. The plug was pulled, and what had once been a major part of the American sports year came to an end.

Corey Kluber doesn’t often appear hittable, beatable or unremarkable.

It’s a baseball rarity, like a triple play.

      On Friday night, it happened.

Kluber had a rare rocky performance, lasting just five innings and losing for the first time in seven starts as Kyle Gibson outpitched the Cy Young winner and Brian Dozier hit a two-run homer off him to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 6-3 win over the Cleveland Indians.

”I guess he proved he’s human,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. ”He doesn’t look like it very often.”

Kluber (10-3) allowed a homer on his fourth pitch of the game to Eddie Rosario and was pulled after throwing just 65 pitches by Francona, who wants to preserve his ace for bigger games ahead.

”If we want to get where we want to go, he’s going to have a major part in that,” Francona said.

It was the shortest outing this season for the All-Star Stephen Gostkowski Jersey , who came in 5-0 with a 0.76 ERA against AL Central teams and was riding several other impressive streaks.

Kluber didn’t offer any excuses and understood Francona’s rationale for lifting him.

”Just out of whack a little bit mechanically,” Kluber said. ”Obviously didn’t make good pitches to a few guys. Made some mistakes and they took advantage of it.”

Gibson (2-4) limited the Indians to one run and three hits in seven innings and got his first win since his season debut on March 31.

Yan Gomes homered in the ninth and the Indians closed to 6-3 before closer Fernando Rodney struck out Francisco Lindor with one on for his 15th save.

The Twins came into the series struggling at the plate and figured to be in for a tough time against Kluber, who has been as dominant this season as any stretch of his career and was seeking to become baseball’s first 11-game winner.

      Kluber, though, wasn’t Kluber.

With Joe Mauer returning from the disabled list after missing 25 games with a strained neck and concussion-like symptoms, Minnesota manager Paul Molitor dropped Dozier from the leadoff spot to No. 5 and the second baseman responded with his two-run homer in the fourth and three RBIs.

Minnesota’s plan was to be aggressive against Kluber and it worked.

”He’s not really a guy where anybody’s too comfortable getting behind or hitting with two strikes,” Molitor said. ”A lot of our damage was aggressive at-bats, Rosie first pitch and Doz I think maybe second pitch of his at-bat, so we were trying to get after him a little bit.”

Dozier put the Twins ahead 4-0 in the fourth, when Kluber allowed his first walk in seven starts.

After Rosario doubled, Kluber threw four balls to Eduardo Escobar, snapping his string without a walk at 46 1/3 innings – the longest for a Cleveland pitcher in 11 years. Rosario then scored when Lindor’s return throw to first after a force out nearly went into Minnesota’s dugout.

Dozier followed by snapping an 0-for-20 slump with his 10th homer, a shot that put Kluber in an unfamiliar hole. The steady-and-stoic star had not given up more than three runs in a game since Aug. 3, a span of 27 starts and testament to his consistency.

      ERROR PRONE

Lindor had two more errors, giving the Indians All-Star shortstop 10 this season, tying his total from 2017.

Francona isn’t concerned about it becoming a lasting trend.

”Shoot Tyrell Williams Jersey , he’s so good,” Francona said. ”We forget how young he is sometimes, because he’s so good. If that’s the worst thing we can come up with, he’s pretty good. ”

      SIDELINED

The Indians were without starting first baseman Yonder Alonso, who was placed on the family-medical-emergency list and will miss at least this series.

      CLEVELAND ROCKS

A trip to Progressive Field may have helped Dozier snap out of his funk. His homer was the 14th of his career at the ballpark, his most in any visiting stadium. Dozier has reached base in each of his last 19 games in Cleveland, batting .316 (24 for 76) with eight homers and 19 RBIs.

      TRAINER’S ROOM

Twins: OF Byron Buxton (toe fracture) is working out with the team and could begin a minor league rehab assignment in a few days. He was injured May 29 and placed on the disabled list the following day.

Indians: There’s still no definitive plan with All-Star LHP Andrew Miller, who has been out since May 24 with right knee inflammation. Francona said the team is taking a ”long-term” approach with the elite reliever, who has been on the DL twice this season. ”When we get him back, we want to keep him back,” Francona said.

      UP NEXT

With their feet firmly on the gas pedal Garry Gilliam Jersey , the Philadelphia 76ers head into their final game of the season riding their biggest winning streak in team history.

The only thing standing between the 76ers and the all-important No. 3 seed in the NBA’s Eastern Conference playoff race: The Milwaukee Bucks, who travel to Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center for a game Wednesday.

With a win or a Cleveland loss to New York on Wednesday, the 76ers lock up the third spot. With a loss and a Cavaliers win, Philadelphia slips to the fourth spot, which means a probable second-round matchup with top-seed Toronto.

And the Sixers have done all this without Joel Embiid for the last two weeks, after their center went down with an orbital bone fracture, which may keep him out for the first games of the playoffs.

“We really haven’t blinked,” 76ers coach Brett Brown told Yahoo Sports. “I feel like the confidence I had was born out of facts and stats and certainly gut feel. The needle is moving a direction that sort of makes you feel good about the underbelly of the program.”

The 76ers enter the matchup riding a 15-game winning streak after a 121-113 victory at Atlanta on Tuesday. J.J. Redick had 28 points, and Ersan Ilyasova had 26 and Marco Belinelli had 20 points off the bench against the Hawks.

Ben Simmons, who is averaging nearly a triple-double since the beginning of March Dion Jordan Jersey , had 14 points, 10 rebounds and six assists Tuesday, and said he knows the importance of the big matchup.

“Especially because it’s the last regular-season game,” Simmons said. “For me, I want to come out and make a statement that we are ready. Obviously we’re without (Joel Embiid) again, but we still have a great team.”

It’s not as if the Bucks have nothing to play for, however.

With a win or a Miami Heat loss to the Raptors on Wednesday, the Bucks can lock up the No. 6 seed and a first-round matchup with, yes, the 76ers. Ordinarily Anthony Sherman Jersey , that might be an obvious plus.

But with the second-seeded Boston Celtics facing myriad injuries, including Kyrie Irving’s season-ending knee surgery, a lower seed may prove more beneficial.

“I’m not going to lose any sleep because, like I said, we put ourselves in a position to where we’re in a pretty good position to determine where we want to be if that’s what we want to do,” Bucks center John Henson told reporters. “But we want to be the highest seed possible. That’s the goal.”

The Bucks meet the 76ers with a two-game winning streak and wins in three of four, with a surprising loss to Brooklyn on Thursday. Milwaukee defeated the Orlando Magic 102-86 on Monday. The Bucks outscored Orlando 57-44 in the second half, with Giannis Antetokounmpo out (ankle). His status is questionable for Wednesday.

“We definitely know we can’t win the whole thing without (Antetokounmpo),” Bucks guard Eric Bledsoe told reporters. “But at the same time, we’ve got a lot of confident guys in the room Tony Gonzalez Jersey ,” Bledsoe said. “We’re trying to get everybody on the same page because we’re going to need everybody.”

The Texas Rangers welcomed back shortstop Elvis Andrus to their lineup, while the Kansas City Royals said goodbye to closer Kelvin Herrera.

Manager Jeff Banister faces a juggling act with getting all his infielders sufficient playing time with Andrus off the disabled list as the Rangers continue a three-game series with the Royals Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium.

Royals manager Ned Yost faces a problem of who will close games with Herrera dealt to the Washington Nationals for three minor league prospects third baseman Kelvin Gutierrez, outfielder Blake Perkins and 17-year-old Dominican right-hander Yohanse Morel.

Andrus was activated Monday after missing 59 games with a fractured right elbow after being hit by a pitch on April 11.

Banister said Andrus will start all three games against the Royals. He went 0-for-3, walked twice and scored a run in his first game back as Texas opened the series with a 6-3 victory

Jurickson Profar, who started 56 games at shortstop while Andrus was on the disabled list, started at second in the series opener, will play third base Tuesday and DH Wednesday.

Banister met with Andrus. Profar, Rougned Odor and Adrian Beltre Monday with a goal to play all four in about five games a week.

“It’s going to be really hard,” Banister said of rearranging the playing time to keep all four sharp and healthy. “Profar has made a case to be one of the everyday players. And everything we’ve challenged (Odor) to do, he’s progressively gotten better. He’s been a significant player on this team and will continue to be one.”

Beltre Lane Taylor Jersey , who belted a three-run homer Monday, will probably be the designated hitter more than he has in the past.

Andrus had never been on the disabled list before this season.

“A guy that has played 10 consecutive years you don’t replace,” Banister said. “You miss everything he does and what he was able to do. He was our three-hole hitter and one of the better centerpieces of the offense. He did a lot of things for us offensively. Obviously, he was one of the leaders with Beltre on defense.”

Herrera was 14 for 16 in save situations this season. Herrera, Greg Holland and Wade Davis were part of Royals’ feared bullpens that helped them win the 2015 World Series and the 2014 American League championship. Herrera can be a free agent after the season and the Nationals needed bullpen help.

“Without him, there is no way we can ever make it to the World Series, win a World Series,” Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. “He’s simply family. He knows he has relationships here that are special.”

The Rangers won their third straight and will seek a season high fourth straight win as Cole Hamels starts against Jason Hammel.

Hamels is 3-6 with a 3.69 ERA in 14 starts this season. The Rangers are 4-10 in his starts this season. He is 3-2 with a 3.51 ERA in six career starts against Kansas City.

Hammel is 0-4 with a 4.26 ERA in six home starts this season and winless in his past eight home starts.

Hammel is 2-3 with a 4.07 ERA in nine career outings against the Rangers. He tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings on May 27 to win at Texas. The losing pitcher was Hamels.

BALTIMORE — The Baltimore Orioles finally found some offense on its just-concluded six-game road trip James White Jersey , a big reason the team split six games.

They scored 20 runs while taking two of three from the Atlanta Braves over the weekend, and the Orioles want to try to keep that going against the Seattle Mariners when their four-game series starts on Monday at Camden Yards.

The Orioles scored 10, 7 and three runs against the Braves, and Mark Trumbo’s bat has come to life. Trumbo had five homers in the past week after getting a pinch-hit blast on Sunday during a 7-3 loss.

Baltimore needs that kind of offense if it wants to continue playing competitively.

Baltimore (23-53) will take on Seattle (47-31) for the first time this season in this series. The Orioles lost two of three in Washington against the Nationals before taking those two games in Atlanta and finally got some good pitching and hitting.

Andrew Cashner (2-8, 4.72 ERA) starts for the Orioles Monday against Felix Hernandez (6-6 Marshawn Lynch Jersey , 5.14). Despite his record, Cashner has not pitched that badly. The Orioles just have not given him a lot of offensive support at times.

He is 2-4 with a 4.04 career ERA versus the Mariners.

Hernandez has been inconsistent throughout much of this season but fared better lately. He has thrown well in three of his last four starts, and the Mariners are hoping for more of the same in this game.

Hernandez has a 5-4 career record and a 3.30 ERA against the Orioles.

The Orioles are starting to get back a number of players who were out due to injuries or have players who are finding their way after being out awhile.

Closer Zach Britton gave up four runs in the ninth inning of Friday’s 10-7 victory over Atlanta. That forced the contest into extra innings, and the Orioles won that in 15, but Britton rebounded and closed out Saturday’s win.

Trumbo has gotten hotter Jim Otto Jersey , and infielder Tim Beckham could return as early as Monday after missing about two months due to core muscle surgery.

“We’re looking forward to getting Tim back,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter told the Baltimore Sun. “We’re hoping to get him back to the player he was when he originally came over (in last summer’s trade with the Tampa Bay Rays). I’m hoping this surgery and some of the things can help him.”

Seattle is hoping that shortstop Jean Segura also will return Monday.

Segura has missed four straight games due to an infection in his right forearm. The arm was drained on Friday but he did not play over the weekend at the Boston Red Sox.

Nelson Cruz has hit in eight straight games and will face his former team in this series. He played for the Orioles in 2014 and helped them win the division and make it to the American League Championship Series before signing with the Mariners after that.

The Mariners could use help from Segura and Cruz as they have struggled throughout this East Coast swing. Seattle has gone just 1-5 on the trip so far, dropping three straight to the Yankees and two of three to Boston.

“We’ve got to get it turned back around,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said. “We had a lot of momentum going but this trip has not gone well, obviously.”

The NFL Players Association has created a medical guide for players Stephon Gilmore Jersey , a 107-page reference book written by scientific professionals with extensive material on concussion detection, treatment and the league's game-day protocol for head injuries.

The union's inaugural "health playbook" was distributed electronically to NFLPA members this week.

Speaking at a head, neck and spine committee meeting during the league's scouting combine, NFL chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills revealed a 16 percent rise in diagnosed concussions, from 250 in 2016 to 291 in 2017. Sills said the data was a "call to action" to the NFL for greater prevention.

The NFLPA health playbook also includes information on joint injuries and wear and tear Harrison Phillips Jersey , high blood pressure and cholesterol, plus performance-related topics such as sleep, nutrition and mental health.

The Jaguars cut running back Chris Ivory in February John Kelly Jersey , which leaves them without a player who played nearly 300 offensive snaps during the 2017 season.

As long as he’s healthy, Leonard Fournette is likely to get some of that work after playing nearly half the snaps during his rookie season. Corey Grant looks like a good bet to see an uptick in playing time as well.

Grant only played 49 offensive snaps in the regular season, but made the most of them by averaging 8.3 yards per carry and 13.7 yards per reception. He also caught three passes for 59 yards in Jacksonville’s playoff loss to New England and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett suggested he’s in line for more action this time around.

“I thought Corey — once again Jerrell Freeman Jersey , he’s a guy that stepped in [last season] and did a great job there at the end — and he’s just a guy we’ve got to get out there,” Hackett said, via First Coast News. “There’s all these guys we’re talking about and it’s a long ways away from that first game to see what we’re going to get but I’d love to put him out there because he’s a major change-of-pace back.”

T.J. Yeldon is also on hand in Jacksonville so Grant won’t be the only option for a change of pace from Fournette Derrick Kindred Jersey , but his knack for hitting big plays makes it easy to understand why Hackett would be interested to see what happens if the ball’s in his hands more often.

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft is helping students and families of victims of the recent shooting at a Florida high school attend a march against gun violence.

The Buffalo Bills have hired Terry Robiskie to be their receivers coach in the latest offseason shuffle of Sean McDermott's staff.

Robiskie has 36 seasons of NFL coaching experience Russell Bodine Jersey , including the previous two as the Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator. He twice finished a season as an interim head coach with Washington in 2000 and Cleveland in 2004.

The 63-year-old replaces Phil McGeoghan who was hired by the Los Angeles Chargers to be their receivers coach on Tuesday. McGeoghan spent just one season in Buffalo and oversaw a patchwork unit that lacked consistency and was also hampered by injuries.

Robiskie joins a revamped offensive staff under coordinator Brian Daboll, who was hired last month. Daboll took over after Rick Dennison was fired days after Buffalo's season ended with a 10-3 loss to Jacksonville in the AFC wild-card playoff round.

The Bills finished last season ranked 29th in yards offense and 31st in yards passing.

Pedro Alvarez has been designated for assignment by the Baltimore Orioles, who made several moves Tuesday in an attempt to improve a team with the worst record in the big leagues.

The 31-year-old Alvarez had a .181 batting average with eight home runs and 18 RBIs in 45 games. Used mostly as a designated hitter, he was in a 1-for-18 skid since his last multihit game, on May 24.

”Pete’s a good man. He’s a good teammate Star Lotulelei Jersey ,” manager Buck Showalter said. ”With the potential of some other people returning (from the disabled list), there just weren’t going to be any at-bats for him.”

It was not a surprising move, given the Orioles entered play Tuesday with a 20-50 record.

”It’s unfortunate for Pedro,” closer Zach Britton said. ”With where we are in the standings, the organization needs to see what we’ve got with some of the young guys.”

As a corresponding move Deion Sanders Jersey , the Orioles selected the contract of infielder Steve Wilkerson from Triple-A Norfolk, whose first appearance will be his major league debut.

”This is a very special moment,” Wilkerson said. ”Regardless of how my season started, I’m very happy and very fortunate to be here right now.”

In December, Wilkerson received a 50-game suspension for a violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Plan.

”It was a very difficult time Zack Martin Jersey ,” he acknowledged. ”I made the decision at that time to try to put my best foot forward.”

In addition, Baltimore recalled catcher Caleb Joseph from Norfolk. Joseph began the season as the Orioles’ starting catcher but was optioned to the minors on May 17 after batting .182 in 24 games.

Joseph joins his brother, Corban Joseph, on the Baltimore roster. Corban Joseph was summoned from Norfolk last week and played in his first big league game since a two-game stint with the Yankees in 2013.

Standing side by side outside the Orioles clubhouse, the brothers relished the notion of being major league teammates.

”The first goal was to get to the big leagues at the same time Reggie Wayne Jersey , and then to be on the same team, this is a storybook (tale) for our family,” Caleb said. ”It’s pretty incredible.”

Corban added: ”It’s like a dream that you never thought would actually come true actually panning out.”

MIAMI — San Francisco Giants rookie Dereck Rodriguez is thrilled to be in the major leagues while Miami Marlins veteran Dan Straily is just relieved he’s not on the disabled list.

Rodriguez and Straily will go at each other in Thursday’s finale to this four-game series. The Marlins (26-42) have won the first three games against the Giants (33-35) including Wednesday’s 5-4 victory T. J. Carrie Jersey , which ended with Brian Anderson’s walk-off sacrifice fly in the ninth inning.

As for Rodriguez (1-1, 5.25 ERA in three starts), he is the son of Hall of Fame catcher Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez.

Meanwhile, Straily (2-2, 4.08 ERA) survived last week when he got hit by a 110-mph line drive off the bat of San Diego Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer. It was a terrifying play, but Straily escaped with bruised ribs and did not miss a start.

“It definitely took the wind out of me,” Straily said of the Hosmer line drive. “I felt myself kind of spinning around.

“When you get hit, you don’t really remember it — you kind of have a momentary blackout. Your body takes over, whether it’s adrenaline or whatever the actual reaction is … You don’t feel anything for a few minutes.”

Straily said it wasn’t until he left the game after 3 2/3 innings that he felt “a little bit of soreness” while back in the locker room.

“It’s never anything you want to deal with, but you keep going forward,” he said. “We all know that we (pitchers) stand the closest to home plate, but you can’t let that stuff bother you or you won’t be able to pitch. You can’t let that be a fear.”

Straily said x-rays were negative — no broken bones.

“If there were any doubt that I’m not 100 percent, I wouldn’t be on the mound,” Straily said. “It’s not about trying to be a tough guy or having a lot of pride.”

The Marlins are 5-3 when Straily starts, but he has allowed 10 runs (nine earned) in his past 13 2/3 innings. He has just two quality starts this season — both on the road — May 18 and 23.

In fact, Straily has been better on the road (1-2 Boomer Esiason Jersey , 2.67 ERA in five starts) as opposed to his home numbers (1-0, 7.11 ERA, three starts).

A promising note for Straily is the fact that he is 4-0 with a 2.43 ERA in five career starts against San Francisco.

His counterpart Thursday, whose full name is Ivan Dereck Rodriguez, is 26 years old and has endured a long journey to get to the majors.

Rodriguez was an outfielder at two South Florida high schools, Hollywood Chaminade and Monsignor Pace. He was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the sixth round in 2011 and switched positions to pitcher late in the 2013 season.

It wasn’t until last year that he finally got to Double A, going 5-4 with a 3.94 ERA in 15 appearances (13 starts).

This year, he went 4-1 with a 3.40 ERA in nine starts at Triple-A Sacramento, earning his promotion to the majors May 29.

Rodriguez lasted only 3 1/3 innings in his debut, allowing five hits, one walk and four runs (one earned) at the Colorado Rockies.

His next start, at home against the Philadelphia Phillies, marked his only major league win as Rodriguez picked up a quality start, allowing one run, five hits and two walks in six innings.

However, Rodriguez allowed five runs in 2 2/3 innings last week against the Washington Nationals Mark Barron Jersey , and that has produced an early trend in which he is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in two road starts.

He clearly has a long way to match the exploits of his father, who was a 14-time All-Star and a 13-time Gold Glove winner. Pudge also won a World Series championship in 2003, his only year with the Marlins.

“I was there almost every game,” Dereck Rodriguez told the Sun-Sentinel when asked about that 2003 season. “I remember everything. It was a year to remember, honestly. I spent a lot of time on the field with the guys. It was a lot of fun.”

Rodriguez can jack up his fastball to 95 mph, which is not surprising given what a strong arm was possessed by Pudge.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy praised Dereck Rodriguez for having good command of four pitches.

“Being a converted (pitcher), it’s impressive how fast he has come on,” Bochy said. “He earned the promotion with the way he was throwing in Sacramento.”

Derrius Guice heard the rumors and wondered why he kept slipping in the NFL draft.

Projected to be a first-round pick, Guice talked to his agents, watched six other running backs get drafted and came away with no more answers. The end of his freefall came Friday night when the Washington Redskins selected the LSU running back late in the second round with the 59th overall pick.

Guice was finally picked minutes after NFL Network reported some of his visits didn't go well and there were incidents in college NFL teams found out about.

"It did surprise me because a lot of the things came out of nowhere and weren't true, and I just didn't understand why me out of all people because I'm great to everybody. I have a great personality and I just didn't understand why everything just hit so hard with me out of everybody," Guice said on a conference call. "I'm just thankful to know that this whole process is over with, that an organization believed in me and trusted in me and I'm just ready to get to work."

Guice denied reports he got into an argument with Eagles general manager Howie Roseman and assistant head coach Duce Staley during his pre-draft visit to the defending Super Bowl champions. Guice said he had no idea about NFL Network suggesting there was another story possibly coming that could be embarrassing to him and the organization.

"My trip to the Eagles was great," Guice said. "There wasn't an altercation when I went. It was great. They were also like family. Me and Duce have a great relationship."

FM-97.5 in Philadelphia reported the argument. Former Eagles running back Brian Westbrook said Friday: "I think he got into a little bit of an argument with Howie, and quite possibly Deuce as well. I don't know that they all saw eye-to-eye."

Coach Jay Gruden described Guice as a "character" with a lot of energy but came out of those meetings satisfied there weren't off-field character issues with the physical, 5-foot-11 Nate Orchard Jersey , 244-pound back. Eager to upgrade the fifth-worst rushing attack in the league, the Redskins met with Guice multiple times, took him after trading down and drafted Louisville offensive tackle Geron Christian with the 74th pick they acquired from San Francisco for No. 44.

"We looked at the reports and talked to Derrius' agent and got a pretty good indication that we felt good about taking Derrius at that position," Gruden said. "Lucky to get him. This is a hard-nosed runner, plays hard, he can catch the football, he can pass protect, he's got good vision and a guy we really liked in early rounds."

Senior vice president of player personnel Doug Williams promised recently acquired quarterback Alex Smith he'd solve the team's running back problem. Guice joins a crowded backfield that also includes 2017 fourth-round pick Samaje Perine, third-down back Chris Thompson and Rob Kelley, who earned the starting job out of training camp last year.

Detroit traded up to the 43rd pick, one ahead of the Redskins, and took another running back in Auburn's Kerryon Johnson.

"I think there's some things that some teams are worried about in terms of some things in his history," Lions general manager Bob Quinn said, refusing to go into specifics. "There were some things. We met with Derrius. He's a good kid. There's some things that we were just a little concerned about."

Guice said falling in the draft will only increase his motivation.

"It's just a feeling that I have inside of me that I've already ran with since being little, and I just feel like it's gotten 10 times worse now," Gucie said. "I can't wait to be unleashed on the field."

On the field Nate Hairston Jersey , Guice led all SEC running backs with 1,387 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns despite starting just six games and set the conference record with three career 250-yard games. He does have durability concerns, which combined with the reports of off-field problems likely contributed to him not being drafted higher.

"I've been talking to (my agents) the whole time either and this is all news to them as well," Guice said. "It's all hitting them and me off guard and out of nowhere and we just don't know where it's coming from our how it happened. It just kind of happened."

It was a tumultuous offseason for Guice, who changed agents and told SiriusXM Satellite Radio that at the combine one team asked him if he was gay and another asked if his mother "sells herself." The NFL conducted an investigation and found no evidence that any team asked Guice inappropriate questions.

This is the highest pick the Redskins have used on a running back since Ledell Betts in 2002. They recouped the third-round pick traded to Kansas City for Smith when they acquired the 59th and 74th picks from San Francisco.

"We felt the trade was needed," Gruden said. "We thought we could add a third-round pick, which was very critical for us."

Gruden expects to keep Christian at tackle, opening up the possibility that Ty Nsekhe moves to left guard, where Washington has an opening.

John Elway has added size Jim Brown Jersey , strength and seasoning to the Denver Broncos‘ roster after spending much of the last two drafts taking chances on players who had lighter resumes and more question marks.

All four of his picks so far – North Carolina State pass rusher Bradley Chubb, SMU wide receiver Courtland Sutton (who redshirted as a freshman), Oregon running back Royce Freeman and Boston College cornerback Isaac Yiadom – spent four years in college.

Collectively, they have 170 games of FBS experience.

Last year’s top pick Jarius Wright Jersey , Garett Bolles, played just one year of major college football, headlining a class that was deep on athleticism but light on polish, one that has yet to pay dividends .

Elway has four more picks Saturday Peyton Manning Jersey , two in the fourth round and two in the fifth, and his biggest needs are along the O-line and maybe even at quarterback with a prospect such as Richmond’s Kyle Lauletta, who could sit behind Case Keenum for a couple of years.

On defense, the Broncos could use another inside linebacker and a run-stuffer.

Bengals tackle Jake Fisher ended last season on the non-football illness list when he was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat that required him to have a corrective surgical procedure.

It’s been over three months since that procedure and Fisher has now been medically cleared to resume his football career. For now John Miller Jersey , that means stepping his offseason workouts back up to the regular level.

“I’ve been working with lighter ones, but now I鈥檓 back to off-season workouts,” Fisher said, via the team’s website. “You have to be conscious of it. You have to monitor it. But you still have to live life. You can鈥檛 let it cripple you in any way.”

Fisher started seven of the Bengals’ first eight games at right tackle last season and should be in the mix for that job again this year. The Bengals have already signed ex-Giant Bobby Hart and are expected to make other moves to shore up an offensive line that underperformed last season.

Tim Tebow has been promoted to Double-A after going 1 for 18 with 11 strikeouts in big league spring training for the New York Mets.

The Mets said Wednesday that the outfielder has been assigned to start the season at Binghamton of the Eastern League. The Rumble Ponies open their season at home on April 5 against Portland.

The 30-year-old Tebow Sammie Coates Jersey , a former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL quarterback, split last season between a pair of Class A teams, Columbia, South Carolina, and St. Lucie. He hit .226 with eight homers and 52 RBIs in 126 games.

Tebow, who is not on the Mets' 40-man major league roster, was hampered during spring training by a left ankle sprain.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The New York Yankees have the best record in baseball at 50-22 Quincy Wilson Jersey , and they’ve rarely been better than against the Tampa Bay Rays this season.

The Yankees won their first five meetings with the Rays this season by a combined margin of 31-10 before losing Sunday, and they’re back again for a weekend series at Tropicana Field, having won seven of eight overall after a sweep of the Mariners.

New York has been dominant for many reasons, but a strong bullpen is certainly one of them, with a collective ERA of 2.86, second only to Houston among American League teams. Part of that has been solid starting pitching requiring less use of relievers. The Yankees’ relievers have thrown close to 70 innings fewer than the Rays have in grinding out a 3.73 ERA in a league-high workload.

“They’ve been terrific,” manager Aaron Boone said of New York’s relievers. “They protect each other, because many guys have stepped up. … It’s a big reason. We’re built in a lot of ways around that great bullpen. They continue to deliver.”

The Rays (34-40) have lost five of seven and have sorely missed that continuity in their starting rotation C.J. Uzomah Jersey , continuing to rely on relievers working as “openers” on patchwork bullpen days. Such will be the case in Friday’s opener, with right-hander Ryne Stanek (1-1, 2.21 ERA) getting the ball first, but expected to go little more than the first inning.

Stanek has pitched exceptionally well in that role, however. In eight June appearances, he has an 0.00 ERA in 10 2/3 innings, having allowed only three hits with 12 strikeouts against three walks. Until their recent skid, the Rays had continued to hover around .500 baseball despite trading away major parts of last year’s team in exchange for prospects.

Stanek started last Saturday’s game against the Yankees Akiem Hicks Jersey , and allowed one hit and no runs in 1 1/3 innings in a game New York won 4-1. He has faced the Yankees five times in his career, inclding that one start, and is 0-0 with a 2.08 ERA over 4 1/3 innings.

The Rays got one key player back after missing two months with injury in center fielder Kevin Kiermaier, whose defense is among the league’s best. His bat has yet to come around this season, though. He is 0-for-9 in two games since returning from the disabled list, lowering his season average to .135.

“He’s fine. He’ll get going,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “Unfortunately, KK got off to a rough start. Those numbers are going to be ugly for a little while Lamarcus Joyner Jersey , but I’m confident he’ll get going … I’m very confident.”

The Rays will face a familiar face Friday in Yankees starter C.C. Sabathia, who is 4-2 this season with a 3.30 ERA, with one of those two losses coming Sunday against the Rays in New York. Sabathia pitched into the eighth but gave up a season-high 10 hits, allowing three runs in a 3-1 loss while striking out a season-high 10 batters and walking only one.

Sabathia has faced the Rays 46 times in his career, and no opponent has more wins against him than the Rays — he’s 16-15 all-time, with a 3.76 ERA.

New York goes into the series with a considerable head of steam. They’re 17-4 in their last 21 games, putting them on pace to challenge the best starts by any team at this stage in the season.
